Seller Description

The
Indian Powerplus is powered by a 61-cubic inch (1000cc) V-twin sidevalve and features a three-speed gearbox, clutch, kickstarter and
German-made magneto ignition. While the standard Powerplus utilized a rigid
frame, it was also available with the optional Indian Cradle Spring Frame which
provided a sophisticated suspension of rear swinging arm and trailing leaf
springs, as fitted to this example. The
Powerplus had twist grips on both handles; the throttle was controlled by the
left twist grip while the right twist grip advanced or retarded the spark.

Three controls were on the right side of the gas tank, a vertically-operated
shifter, an exhaust valve lifter, and a hand clutch lever. The clutch lever was
linked to the clutch pedal positioned on the left side of the bike.
This 1919 Powerplus was
purchased from the Otis Chandler Vintage Museum of Transportation in 1997 by
the current owner, who restores and repairs classic and vintage motorcycles, in
a restored-for-display condition. He
started and test-rode the machine, then disassembled it to inspect every
component. While much was new and in factory condition inside, some less than
ideal items were replaced. The cylinders were lightly honed and new rings
fitted to the existing (new) pistons, the crankshaft resurfaced and new
bushings fitted, all new gaskets, magneto serviced. Many parts were nickel
plated as per original at that time. New Coker 28x3 white studded tires were
fitted. The correct Indian Red paint was sourced (and a pint can is available)
and professionally applied, and the sheetmetal pinstriped as original. There are no reproduction parts on the machine.
Following the rebuild and restoration, the engine was test run
briefly to check for proper operation, then shut down, drained and not started since, to prevent
discoloring of the nickeled engine components and exhaust system, as the Indian was to be used for show and display. All components do
function as intended, including the hand oil pump for the total-loss
lubrication system, the tank-mounted “syringe” fuel primer, hand controls, etc.
A custom stand was fabricated to allow both wheels on the ground for display
purposes and is included.
This 100-year old Indian has been
displayed in many shows over the years and is a multiple Best-in-Class and Best-in-Show
winner, including the recent Handford Vintage Motorcycle Show where it won Best
Vintage. The El Camino Classic Motorcycle Show has awarded this Powerplus
awards on several occasions over the years and featured the machine in its
literature, as seen in the photo. Trophies will be included in the sale if the
new owner so wishes.
The Powerplus was the most modern and advanced motorcycle of its time, used for transportation, touring, racing and even police duty. This example is eligible for all vintage and pioneer events, including the Cannonball Run, and will be welcomed at any concours worldwide. This 1919 Indian Powerplus
is being offered on a Bill of Sale, as well as the original Bill of Sale from
the Otis Chandler Museum and a prior owner California title document.
