After a few years of selling M-series pickups, Studebaker revealed a radically re-designed model, the R-series, to welcome the 1950s. The South Bend, Indiana company’s new trucks looked futuristic compared to anything else out on the market. It was attractive enough to draw in buyers yet tough and practical to handle hard work. This seldom-seen truck, built at the Chippewa Avenue Plant, spent most of its life in California and has been treated to a complete frame-off restoration. The previous owner was a longtime Studebaker collector and even his wife drove a Studebaker Golden Hawk!
Dressed in correct Cherokee Red, the paint and trim are in overall very good order. The glass and stainless steel are all in good shape for their age as well. The truck’s bodywork is straight while the engine bay is very tidy. The white bumpers feature red trim. The 6.5-foot cargo bed features double sidewall construction and is decorated with wooden side rails.

This truck has several dealer-installed accessories – a Fulton Sun Shield, gravel guards on the rear fenders, rear bumper and turn signals.
This truck rolls on Broadway Classic whitewall radials, size 205/75R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on red beauty rings with factory chrome center caps shared with the Studebaker Commander passenger car. The wheels are in excellent condition while the tires are in very good shape. The truck rides a 112-inch wheelbase and has a 4,600 GVWR. The 2R series trucks rode on solid axles and leaf springs front and rear, but there were differences in the springs used on 1/2, 3/4 and one-ton trucks. In the rear, was a hypoid, semi-floating rear axle. The 2R5 used eight-leaf front springs that measured 40-inches long and 1 3/4 inches wide. In the rear, the 2R5 used nine-leaf springs, mounted under the axle, measuring 51Вѕ inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide.
Under that hood is Studebaker’s 169 CID Econ-O-Miser inline six-cylinder engine. The Econ-O-Miser, which was used in the Studebaker Champion passenger car. This motor is mated to a Borg-Warner three-speed manual transmission and a Dana 44 rear end with a 4.82:1 gear ratio and optional overdrive (another Studebaker exclusive in the truck field). Steering on the R5 was a variable ratio 15.4:1 manual box. The 2R series Studebakers used hydraulic drum brakes at all four corners, which were self-centering and self-adjusting.
Studebaker truck interiors were decorated inside in typical late 1940s/early 1950s truck fashion. Here, there’s an updated tan cloth bench seat, contrasting camel carpet, the tan headliner looks fantastic, red metal door panels and a metal dash that features a full array of gauges but the fuel gauge and wipers are inoperable. The two-spoke steering wheel is a carryover item from the M-series. A column-mounted shifter completes the interior.
Standard equipment could vary but usually included dual sun visors, arm rests on driver and passenger’s side, an ashtray and a cab light that turned on and off when the doors were opened and closed, door locks and a pressed fiber headliner. The headlamp dimmer switch, vents and engine starter were all foot controlled.
Even though pickup trucks were among the first civilian vehicles made and offered for sale after World War II ended, most companies were content to roll out their pre-war trucks before offering redesigns. Studebaker was no different, with the M-series truck sold until 1949.
Documentation includes the original owner’s manual. This beautiful truck is a definite survivor from an era when pickup trucks were specifically work trucks. Decades later, it retains its good looks. If you’re after a rare classic pickup, something to attract attention at a cruise night or car show, this Studebaker could be just the ticket for you!
