The time has come at 72 years of age to
start thinning the collection. I am selling my unrestored 2 owner original
paint Skyline Blue/Birch White 1957 Harley Davidson XL Sportster, VIN #
57XL1265, a very early bike.

This motorcycle was purchased by me from
the original owner and I have a clear Pennsylvania title in my name. The bike
starts, runs, shifts and rides very well and in my opinion better than expected
for a 62 year old motorcycle. I was told by the original owner that the mileage
(15,762) on the odometer is actual mileage and I have no reason to doubt him.
Belly numbers are 757 1258 and matching. To the best of my knowledge the engine
has never been apart, attached photographs help bear this out.
The oil tank, tool box and original
kicker arm along with some miscellaneous sundries had been chrome plated early
in the bike’s life. A Tour Pack had been added and 2 holes (in photos) drilled
in the rear fender to accommodate a homemade mounting bracket that was made for the
Tour Pack. The Tour Pack has been
removed as in my opinion it detracted from the overall appearance of this
Classic First Year Sportster.
I have taken several close up
photographs of significant importance to first year Sportsters that true
collectors and aficionados will recognize and hopefully appreciate. For example the date
codes and triangle logo on the original engine cylinders which have never been
removed as well as the original factory silver paint still remaining on the
cylinders and heads along with photographs of possibly the nicest original seat
I have seen on any 1957 Sportster or K Model. Original choke assembly, “window”
air filter cover attached to the original Linkert DC1 carburetor and original
casting numbers on the never removed rocker boxes. Original “cloth lacquer”
covered clutch and brake cables remain in tact. A few minor pieces
of hardware may have been changed over the 62 years of this motorcycles life,
however as you can see by the photographs, 99% of the hardware is correct down
to the straight slotted rear fender brace screws with rarely seen proper 5/16”
concave tooth lock washers.
As you can see in the photographs the
right rear passenger foot peg has been removed, the rare mounting bracket is
still attached to the bike, it is likely that the footrest was removed so there
was no interference during the kick start process. I could go on, but I will
let the photographs speak for themselves.
A personal inspection is welcomed and
encouraged by the purchaser or their representative will verify the originality
of this motorcycle.
If you are a “spit and polish”, 2 foot
deep paint luster collector, this bike is NOT for you. If on the other hand you
are looking for an original motorcycle with expected nicks and scratches first year iconic
1957 Sportster with less than normal wear and tear for a 62 year old Classic
unrestored motorcycle, here is your opportunity to own one.
I again encourage inspection by the
bidder or their agent prior to bidding, I am retired and will make every effort
to make the bike available for inspection.
Needless to say, there is NO WARRANTY
either expressed or implied on this 62 year old motorcycle. As the old saying
goes, “THEY ARE ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE”.
