Seller Description

There were only 25,881 of
these stunning cars made and less than a third of them were Right hand Drive
and even less of them survived 50+ years on. The 190sl has become a style icon
of its very own within the last few decades and no longer under the shadow of
its larger, cripplingly expensive big brother the 300sl. Like the Jaguar E Type,
the 190SL is one of the most collectible and recognizable cars of the modern
era. An article from the New York Motor Show best described the Mercedes Benz
190 SL as "Beautifully restrained, elegant, and just about perfect."
....... "a stunning new production sports car that offers three hits Race
bred performance, luxurious comfort and operational robustness".
This Right-Hand Drive
190 SL (W121) currently resides in a dry, heated garage in South Wales UK in my father’s
house. It is a completely original, still numbers matching and delivered new to
the UK in 1960. This rare Mercedes-Benz 190 SL presents beautifully in the
flagship German Colour Grey on Cream leather seats and Red Carpets.

Interesting
Fact that the national colour for British sports cars was British Racing Green,
Italian was Red and German was Grey so this is the colour intended for the
marque.
The 190s M121 power
unit produces 105 bhp at 5,700rpm, the first engine of its kind for
Mercedes-Benz and enough to propel the 190 SL from a standing start to 100 km/h
in 13 seconds. German mechanical touches to the car are the sharply defined 4
speed manual transmission that requires only a light touch to change gear while
swing axles in the rear and double wishbones up front, plus rack and pinion
steering work to provide plenty of driver feedback and the overall feel behind the
wheel of this well-maintained car is totally engaging and never ever, boring.
Finding a 190 SL in
this condition is incredibly rare and values are ever increasing. The 190SL, first
released in 1955, was Mercedes Benz first overhead camshaft production engine.
It was also the first Benz passenger car to employ unitary construction
technique and massive backbone chassis with streamlined styling derived from
Mercedes racing efforts of the period. Suspension is via an independent front
end with a single pivot swing axle arrangement at the rear, providing safe
secure handling.
The car has been with
my father for 10 years in which time he has maintained it regardless of cost. The
car has recently had a new black Mohair roof installed which looks strikingly
beautiful contrasting against the paint. It still carries all of its original
chrome dials and switches in crystal clear condition, along with the rare and
expensive original clock and has the original Bakelite steering wheel and gear shift
knob which are perfectly smooth to the touch. The rare original interior mirror
is present attached to the correct “gooseneck” bracket. The correct leather
seats hug the driver and passenger perfectly and ensure a very comfortable
ride.
Two, twin choke Weber
carburetors and K&N air filters are fitted to this particular car, giving
it improved performance.
It also includes the
original owner’s manual, original spare wheel and tyre. The 190 SL has always
followed the 300 SLs in terms of collectability and design elements like chrome
“eyebrows” over the wheel arches and its curvy architecture directly mirror the
300 SLs.
Since the car has been
in the current ownership, it has had very light use and has only been driven in
dry weather. Many new parts have been fitted during this time as and when
required or to improve its performance and reliability. These include a
radiator re-core, along with new hoses and pressure cap, new (correct) fuel
pump and reserve tap, new fuel gauge and sender unit, new water pump and timing
chain tensioner. The rear brakes have recently been fitted with new shoes,
wheel cylinders and adjusters. The centre track rod has also been replaced.
The smart new hood has
had a new frame timber fitted along with the smart chrome trim.
A new starter motor
and ignition switch have been fitted as has a new brake servo and master
cylinder. The newly fitted gearchange linkage bushes give a tight, positive,
smooth gear change. A new Bosch battery has also been fitted and has a very
useful isolator switch fitted.
It comes with a Black,
smaller window hardtop which can be negotiated into the sale if the price is
correct.
I live in Brisbane and
can assist with the electronic viewing of the car and act as point of contact
where needs be to give you the confidence that we are not trying to sell a non-existent
car. please ignore the postal details in theadvert we will assist in every way possible in getting this to the right port in the UK but it will need to be shipped at the new owners expense. The genuine reason we decided to advertise it in Australia is because we
want it to be driven and enjoyed. The UK is not really the place for such a
beautiful convertible with rare opportunities to drive it with the roof down. It belongs in an Australian garage where it can be preserved with regular trip on stunning country or coastal roads.
