Seller Description
For No Reserve Auction is a rarely available 1962 Royal Enfield Super Meteor motorcycle. Engine number: QD 20318. Frame number: 11574. Gearbox number: AGH 472. Odometer: 31,530 miles. The bike was a New Zealand import to Australia. Its provenance is unclear.
Royal Enfield Dispatch Records indicate the frame and gearbox are correct numbers, exported to Ken George in Perth WA in March 1962. The engine is incorrect, imported from a UK dealership in 1961. The super rare Airflow fairing was also an aftermarket fitting. The bike is fitted with a chrome pannier rack, what appears to be a Police (2 mph graduation) Smiths Speedometer, and accessory electrical switches inside the fairing. The fairing is Royal Blue. The seat red vinyl. It appears the bike was a special build, perhaps for police or escort service.
In 1953, Royal Enfield introduced the 700 cc Meteor, which was the largest vertical twin produced in Great Britain at the time. Performance was increased in 1956 with the launch of the Super Meteor 700cc producing 40 bhp and a top speed above the magical ton’. This example was dispatched in 1962, the last year of production.
Motor Cycling Magazine said “not only does the new Meteor 700 vertical twin offer most exhilarating acceleration and high speed, but both of these features are attained with a complete lack of fuss”.
This model is fitted with the rare Airflow fibreglass fairing, initially made in house by Royal Enfield but after 1958, by Bristol Aircraft Ltd who helped design the fairing. It is claimed that the fairing increased top speed by 5-8%.
This bike is sold on an 'as is / where is' basis with all faults. It is sold as a refurbishment and restoration project.
Bidders must satisfy themselves with the condition of the bike, its provenance, originality and the restoration work required before bidding. There is no warranty expressed or implied. There are no refunds. Images form part of the description. The bike is in relatively good condition, but is missing parts. Rubber and plastic parts may have hardened and perished. The motor turns over with good compression. The bike has been sitting in storage, unused for many years. Inspection is recommended.
This is a No Reserve auction. The highest bidder owns the bike. Payment by Bank Deposit, or Cash on Pickup is available. Local pickup from the southern highlands of NSW by you or your bike courier.
