Chassis
Restoration:
The
body was removed from the frame and a comprehensive restoration was
undertaken. The frame was sandblasted and refinished. All brake and
fuel lines were replaced with stainless steel. Full length Keystone
stainless steel exhaust system. The brakes were rebuilt with rebuilt
calipers and new wheel cylinders and new friction material. The fuel
tank was cleaned and painted. Koni shock absorbers, front and rear.
New chrome plated Magnum 500 wheels with knock-off centers. Firestone
radial tires. Custom aluminum radiator.
Engine
and Transmission:
Original Studebaker 289 C.I.D. V-8 engine rebuilt at East Side
Machine, Waynesboro, Virginia. .030” overbore and a mild
performance camshaft. Dual Edelbrock 4Bbl. Carburetors on an alloy
intake, Polished finned alloy valley cover and valve covers. New fuel
pump. New one wire alternator. Electronic ignition with MSD box.
Transmission rebuilt and resealed. Estimated Horsepower: 280
Condition:
This
very solid original car has been selectively restored. Purchased from
a collectors estate in original finish, the current owner chose to do
a comprehensive chassis restoration so the car could be enjoyed
trouble free. The exterior finish and chrome trim are original.
The
Studebaker Avanti Coupe, masterpiece of Raymond Lowey Studios, is
considered one of America's most significant automobiles. Andy
Granatelli set 29 speed records at Bonneville in 1963, with speeds
exceeding 168 MPH in a twin blown Avanti. This made the Avanti the
fastest production car in the world that year. Among the famous
owners of these cars is Ian Flemming (creator of James Bond) and
singer/songwriter/actor Ricky Nelson. The original and unique round
headlight design was a feature of only the 1963 first year models.
All subsequent production had square headlights. Only 3834 of the
iconic original design were produced. This is a car every bit as
important as the 810/812 Cord.
