Seller Description

1963 Sunbeam AlpineSeries III
The Sunbeam Alpine is a British sports car that was built from 1[hidden information], by the Rootes Motor Company. These cars were built in England, and also distributed into the US. The Alpine, according to Hemmings Motor News, calls it the, “Best kept secrets in British sports car motoring” with charming period styling, accommodating interiors and bullet proof mechanics. The advertising for US literature noted that the Sunbeam was “Slick-swift-spectacular.” The Sunbeam Alpine predates the Sunbeam Tiger, which was produced from 1964 -1967, and boasted the Ford V8 power train.
This 1963 Sunbeam AlpineSeries 3, carries the 1592 cc twin down draft Zenith carburetors, 4 cylinder engine with 9.1:1 compression, 84 horse power and 84 lbs of torque at 3800 RPM, mated with a 4 speed gear box. The body was advanced for the times, with monocoque construction integral under floor X reinforcements. It uses front coil springs with semi trailing wish bones, an anti roll bar and has disc brakes.
1963 was the last year for this styling, boasting the most refined tail fins. Theseries 3, had the lowest production of all models, and ran only from March 1963, to January 1964. You may remember these cars from the popular 1970’s hit TV series, “Get Smart.” Maxwell Smart was infamous for driving his cardinal red Sunbeam, on all of his precarious adventures. The film speed may have been altered a little bit, to add to the flare of Maxwell’s speedy little car.
This particular Alpine, has had the same owner for 29 years. He was a proud member of the Sunbeam Sportscar Owners Club of Canada. The car was regularly driven, and well maintained. Included with the sale, is a neat compilation of all receipts, club news letters and all work shop manuals.
The body of the car is in fair condition and was restored many years ago. Some filler cracking is evident on the trunk and it shows some rust in the inner fenders. The interior has been redone and is true to the original styling. The wheels are true centre bolt, wire wheel take offs. (Comes with a lead hammer specific for quick removal of the wheel) The wire wheels were recently professionally powder coated and run with tire tubes. The hand brake works fine, however the main brakes have lost fluid and are currently not working. The car has not been driven much in the last 3 years and will require some fine tuning and maintenance. It has been carefully stored indoors away form the elements and cold.
