1968
Chevy Big Block Camaro
The
now legendary Chevrolet Camaro was first released for the 1967 model year as a
2 door, 4 seater, hardtop or convertible with one mission in mind, to be better
than their biggest competitor – Ford’s Mustang. The first generation cars ran
until 1969 on the same platform with minor revisions from year to year. Today,
the first generation Camaro’s are amongst the most popular and sort after
Muscle cars in the market. This car is a high quality example of a tastefully
modified big block powered 1968 Chevrolet Camaro
The
car was purchased by the current owner 7 years ago and was imported into
Australia circa 2008. Pop the bonnet and you can immediately see the quality of
this car. Front and center sits a thumping 396ci Big Block Chevy V8 that was
built in 2019. Some go fast goodies were added during the build and includes
new pistons, new Edelbrock heads, Edelbrock manifold, a mild cam, new
extractors and exhaust. The Turbo 700R Automatic transmission was rebuild to
handle the increased horsepower. While the motor and trans were out of the car,
the engine bay was repainted nicely and the power steering system was
completely rebuilt. The whole front end also received the treatment with new
bushes and tie rod ends. The task of cooling that big block was assigned to a
Desert cooler radiator with twin thermo fans. Transferring the power to the
ground is a GM 10 bolt diff with 3.08:1 gear ratios. Billet hinges were also
added to provide some extra bling to the engine bay.
The
body on the car is nice and straight with clean crisp lines all around. The car
is covered in a near flawless coat of Coca Cola Red paintwork with contrasting
silver stripes. Externally the car features all of the correct features for the
RS (Rally Sport) styling package including front parkers under the bumper,
reverse lights and most notably, the hideaway headlights in the front grill.
The chrome work is beautifully presented with no pitting or dulling. Front and
rear spoilers help to give the car an aggressive profile. The cowl induction
hood hints that there is something serious under the bonnet. The stance is nice
sitting on a set of staggered 17” Performance wheels.
Inside
the car has been retrimmed in its original style Black with Houndstooth
inserts. The original dash cluster has been ditched in favour of a full set of
Autometer Carbon series gauges in a moulded cluster. Poking it’s head up
between the bucket seats is a B&M quick shifter for banging through the
gears when you need to get away in a hurry. Power steering and power brakes with
a dual circuit master cylinder make sure the car is as nice to drive down the
road as it looks standing still. This is a tough and well sorted muscle car for
the whole family.
Car of this quality don’t often come up at this price point,
if you snooze on this one you may be left kicking yourself.
