Seller Description
90% restored 1970 BSA A65F Firebird Scrambler. I’m not going to say “rare” because I don’t know, but how many of these have you seen for sale lately? First let me dispense with what I did not restore: the bottom end and transmission; chrome on headlight, handlebars, fenders, and tank (which is in surprisingly good shape after 50 years). Now let’s get on to what I did to this bike, having spent a documented $10,470, excluding the extra $1,000 for shipping, tax and registration. Starting with the ENGINE: BRAND NEW NOS cylinder head, Black Diamond valves, new valve springs. Cylinders bored .020” over by E&V Engineering, barrels and cam followers surfaced, fitted with JE 9.2:1 Angle-Dome forged pistons w/rings and new wrist pins. New Barnett clutch friction plates. Cases cleaned up and aluminum covers polished. All ignition components replaced with new points, condensers, coils, etc. Carbs cleaned up. SRM billet sump guard.
The entire exhaust system is new, made in England, including the outrageously expensive heat “sheild.” PAINT: Frame and all of the major black bits professionally painted and clear-coated. Tank and side covers also, with clear coat as well. The deep metallic red is not a perfect OEM match, but damn, it looks good. Correct decals (Except for those on side of the gas tank. The correct naked tank was wanting.) WHEELS: front brake rebuilt and radiused by Vintage Brake, Ferodo linings front and rear. The front brake WILL now stop the bike. SS spokes, new British made rear rim, new Dunlop Gold Seal K70 tires. EVERYTHING ELSE: $3,649 spent on a zillion new nuts, bolts, and parts too numerous to enumerate. I spent $2,816 with Baxter Cycle alone (they like me). All handlebar controls, cables, rubber new. New Emgo shocks. Chromed the rear brake parts (it was too black down there). Tachometer rebuilt in Canada. New fork seals and SS seal holders. Ewarts petcocks rebuilt. Crankcase shield. Saddle recovered. Manuals and parts book. The wiring and all other electrics were actually OK. Currently 400 miles on the rebuild. Not broken-in yet. Then there’s the many uncounted hours of my skilled labor. That’s the good stuff, now what’s wonky about the bike? Scratches on end of front fender (photo). When the front wheel is straight, the handlebars are turned 3° to 4° left. This one baffles me because the fork tubes are arrow straight. If you don’t look at it, you’d never know it driving down the road, but… The clutch plates want to stick together after a ride. So after riding and before letting it sit too long, I pull in the lever and kick it through a few times. I trust this will go away with wear on the new friction plates. TITLE: There was no suitable option offered by eBay other than "Clear," but... This bike came out of Maine which does not require a title for bikes older than ’95. Washington is really anal. I had to get the MATCHING NUMBERS inspected by the State Patrol before I could get it registered and licensed. Then they’ll issue title after 3 years! If you’re in WA, no problem, but it’ll otherwise have to go on a bill of sale. BTW it runs great. Starts on first to 3rd kick. And I’ll throw in a Pazon electronic ignition for Brit twins I’m not using, plus a few other new bits. Standard $500 down via PayPal, though the eBay software wouldn't let me check that box. You handle shipping, I will facilitate from my residence. Will take cash or check or wire transfer.
