Seller Description

Vehicle Details
1970 Camaro Z28 360hp w/ 380 ft lbs torque. This is the highest horsepower Z28 GM/Chevrolet ever produced in the 1960s and 70s. This was also the highest horsepower 2nd Gen Camaro Z28 with special 3 year only LT1 solid lifter high compression engine, producing 70 more horsepower than the 1969 Z28 and 90 ft lbs more of torque. This engine was proudly referred to by Zora Arkus-Duntov of Chevrolet as the “mouse that roared” !INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PARTICULAR CAR: I purchased this 1970 Camaro Z28 from a man in Wisconsin in June 2021. The former owner had been working on restoring it for more than 10 years. He had a major event in his life that made it not practical to keep the car and finish it. So, I was able to acquire it and have done a lot of work to it in the meantime--along with putting a lot of money into it. I was only interested in buying the car if it was an authentic Z28. The former owner assured me it was and showed me before I paid for it the Z28 on the trim tag and told me it had the special 12 bolt F41 suspension, etc etc. He told me he had known about the car/the history of it even before he purchased it for a very long time and that it was a Z28 optioned with M22 rocker crusher close ratio transmission and 4.10 rear axle. After purchasing the car and having it professionally transported to Indiana I had GM official records pulled on the car by VIN and the results confirmed the prior owner was being honest. GM microfiche records showed it was sold new at Pat Long Chevrolet in West Allis, WI. So, until June of 2021 it looks that car had always remained in WI since sold new. The official GM production date of the car is July 21st, 1970. I also made sure that the trim tag was authentic in that the last six of this cars VIN of [hidden information] is correct for GMs records of vin sequence for 1970 by month at the plant it was assembled. This particular Z28 was built at GMs Norwood plant and the trim tag is correct when compared to July 1970 Norwood production began at car [hidden information] and ended in July with car [hidden information]. This cars trim tag with July fisher body date on the trim tag and VIN ending [hidden information] validates the trim tag belongs to this cars body and VIN. The four bolt main GM# [hidden information] engine block is stamped VO625CTB on the pad, the GM#[hidden information] transmission is stamped POH22C. Both the block and the transmission have the cars VIN stamping in them which is stamped 10N[hidden information]. The block VIN stamping is down by the oil filter. The GM # [hidden information]NF twelve bolt special high performance rear axle has COO stamping on the axle tube for 4.10 ratio posi. The crankshaft is the special high performance GM #1182 forged steel, the pistons are .030 Seal Power/TRW forged, the GM #[hidden information] double hump heads are the large valve 2.02/1.600 with spin in studs and guide plates which was an upgrade over the 1969 Z28 for 1970 -1972 Z/28 to keep the rocker studs from pulling out with the solid lifter high lift camshaft. The camshaft presently in the engine is correct based off the GM #[hidden information] camshaft with 242/254 duration at .050 and .459/.485 lift on a 116 LSA. The carburetor is extremely rare GM #[hidden information] Holley LIST 4555 dated it is dated March 2nd week 1970 and it is an original GM unit not a reproduction. The intake manifold is the GM#[hidden information] winters snowfake aluminum high rise and it is also a GM produced unit, not a reproduction. The engine was fully rebuilt and re-balanced in 2021 and received the very expensive set of EDM face oiling solid mechanical lifters which are great for solid flat tappet lifters on not so great modern oil. Cam was broke in at high RPM for 45 minutes +/- with zinc. The heads received stainless valves and a professional valve job along with a new set of Z28 valve springs. The block was bored and torque plate honed with three different stones for moly rings. Obviously new bearings, new double roller timing set, new seals and gaskets, etc were used. The cranks was rebalanced for the .030 over forged pistons used and micro polished. The engine has the deep groove pulleys, GM points distributor with upgraded Pertronix electric ignition under the cap, and headers that have been coated in VHT high temp. The former owner had the car painted back to its correct code 71 Daytona Yellow with Black stripes as it was painted green at one time up in Wisconsin early in its life. The prior owner went to a lot of expense with his body shop to put it back the correct factory color. The car was heavily dismantled to accomplish this as to paint all the door jams, trunk jams, and under hood jams back to yellow. The former owner also had the front windshield and rear glass removed so the front dash could be restored and repainted--along with rear window channels. The car also received two rear quarters, rear inner wheel boxes, and new floor boards and other rust repairs including rear torque box frame rail caps before it was painted back to correct color. One of the nicest areas or strengths of this car besides the metal of the dash near VIN plate is under the hood in the engine bay area.

The prior owner pulled the entire front clip (two front fenders/dog house) off the car so the inner fenders and fire wall and core support could be sanded an painted to a show quality finish. When I acquired the car I had to re-install and rebuild the engine and transmission. I had the transmission taken down to a bare case and cleaned and a brand new set of M22 straight cut gears installed along with new sliders, synchros, forks, seals and gaskets. I also had to have a glass company re-install the front and rear window glass. I had to reinstall the door panels, bumpers front and rear, and all the exterior trim and emblems, and all the trim around window glass. I actually installed brand new Z28 grill emblem, new rear trunk Z28 emblem and both Z28 fender emblems were new. I SOS polished all the trim and cleaned all chrome before re-installing. I purchased new Precision seals for the doors and body and trunk seal and installed them new to the car. The car has the very rare one year only correct steering wheel correct for Z28 which is not reproduced. The car has the correct shifter boot and black two-piece shift ball on hurst shifter. I made sure the inner shift boot was also installed so to seal the tunnel from the exterior and the four bezel screws were put back in the factory holes to hold the shift boot. The car has been buffed and polished. I do have the front licence plate bracket. I chose not to put it on since in Indiana we do not run a front plate and it looked funny to me to have the bracket on the front without a plate. Might still install it with one of those vintage Chevrolet USA-1 plates, not sure. The Z28 GM mag rims were repainted and new rings and center caps installed. The BF tires are radial and seem to be in pretty good condition tread wise, etc. The prior owner had the front suspension all rebuilt: ball joints, bushings, end links, shocks etc. I installed a brand new gas tank and cleared it with professional clear coat and hardener so it will not corrode. The mufflers, mid pipes, and tail pipes were coated in VHT high temp. The trunk was refurbished with new spatter paint and also cleared with professional clear with catalyst hardener so the spatter paint will not flake off easily and be more waterproof. While I am sure there are better restorations or examples that exist in the world, I am not asking $60k-$80k either. As you can see myself and prior owner spent ALOT of time and money on the car. I have owned four different factory solid lifter 2nd Gen Z28s in my life and this is the first one that has had M22 and 4.10 COO rear axle I have seen. My other cars were M20 or M21 so I think the rock crusher is pretty neat. It was GMs top unit and is what they used for the 450hp LS6 Chevelle for 1970 and other special cars such as L88 Corvette and ZL1 Camaro. Also, I like the Daytona Yellow with black stripes but this is my own personal taste. Head liner appears to be the factory headliner and is in good shape and car retains the GM factory seat belts including the shoulder belts up on the headliner. This car is a 51 year old used car--it is not a new car. All these old cars have their own strengths and weaknesses in my opinion, and I have yet to see a perfect one no matter how much money and time have been put into them. I invite and encourage anyone interested to schedule appointment to come look in person or hire inspector before purchasing. I re-ran the valves after engine was broken in to ensure the cam seated correctly and valve lash was staying in spec. I also put a full rebuild kit in the Holley 780cfm carb taking it down to the bare center section. I run the engine on premium pump gas from the normal gas stations, no exotic fuel. I installed a new OER front chin spoiler on the front of the car. The car has the taller rear spoiler option referred to as COPO 9796 package which was an available option for 1970 Z28 that could be ordered beginning April 26th 1970. It does have the floor mount gas pedal and rear bumper guards, 150 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tach. The carpet trim panels/sill panels were SOS cleaned and polished before installing. The radio is a GM Delco AM unit correct for 1970 Camaro Z28. The brake system was fully rebuilt/restored from the master cylinder to the booster, along with calipers, and bled. This car has power front disc brakes and power steering with heavy duty 3 row 26" radiator. The power steering lines high pressure hoses were replaced with new!
