Going for the gold? Then you need to stop at MotoeXotica Classic Cars to warm up to this meticulous rotisserie nut and bolt restoration Series 1 1971 Datsun 240Z, a prime example of Datsun’s classic two-seater. Recently, in 2018 the car was disassembled, stripped, and placed on a rotisserie, where careful rebuild and bodywork were performed. The car was then refinished in it’s correct shade of Safari Gold, the black vinyl interior was replaced and updated with an aftermarket sound system, and the suspension and brakes were fully serviced and reassembled.
This example was made in January 1971 at Nissan’s Shatai factory in Japan and was sold new at Terry Allen Auto Inc. in El Cajon, California on February 18, 1971 to its first owner, Albert B. of La Mesa, California. It was initially registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles on March 20, 1971.
A year later, its second owners, Doug and Judy H. of Poway, California, owned the car from 1972 to 2013, with Judy selling it to its most recent owner, Mathew K, of Plymouth, Minnesota in 2013. Mat drove the car for a few months before draining its fluids and storing it. In 2018, he had the vehicle completely disassembled, stripped and placed on a rotisserie for complete restoration.
While the body was getting re-done, the black vinyl interior received a correct replacement, the suspension and brakes received a thorough going-over and reassembly, the engine was rebuilt and overbored and the clutch assembly was replaced. The car’s metamorphosis was completed in the summer of 2019.
The car’s correct Safari Gold paint (code 920) and trim are in excellent condition, as expected after such a recent restoration. The Z has straight and solid bodywork, the engine bay is immaculate, the cargo area is crisp and the chrome wraparound bumpers are brilliant. The body underside was sprayed with bedliner material. Over $28,000 in receipts for paintwork alone and it really shows!!!
This Z rolls on Michelin X radials, size 185/70R14, mounted on five-slot mag wheels. A set of original steel wheels dated December 1970 accompany the car with the original hard to find Datsun D hubcaps.

The mag wheels are in good condition while the tires are in very good shape. The braking system was overhauled with a new master cylinder, hard and soft lines, pads, rotors and wheel bearings. The calipers were also rebuilt and a replacement parking brake cable has been fitted.
The suspension was reportedly modified during the 1990s under earlier ownership using Eibach springs and Tokico Illumina shock absorbers, which remain under the car.
Under the front-hinged hood is a numbers matching rebuilt 2.4L straight six-cylinder engine. While the car’s body underwent rehabilitation, the engine came out and received its own set of modifications. The previous owner reportedly had the engine disassembled, machine work performed and the cylinders were overbored by .030 inches. The crankshaft was also reground. The motor was then re-assembled with a Z Cars Source kit that included replacement flat-top pistons, bearings, gaskets and a timing chain. Other engine items include dual SU carburetors, a Pertronix ignition module, a ceramic-coated header and a 2.5-inch exhaust system. Other engine features are a 60-amp alternator and a plastic radiator fan with partial shroud. The replacement E31 cylinder head is reportedly previously re-built.
During the revamp, the car’s four-speed manual transmission received its own changes. The case was cleaned, the clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced and a clutch kit was installed.
Inside, the car’s refreshed black vinyl interior has high-back bucket seats with a diamond-stitched transmission tunnel and rear strut covers. The seats and matching carpet are in excellent order, as is the black headliner with working courtesy light. A three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver while the black instrument panel offers a full array of gauges. The dash’s and inner door panels’ condition mirrors that of the rest of the interior. A center console and floor-mounted shift lever help complete the interior, along with a RetroSound AM/FM stereo with speakers in the kick panels and the cargo bay. The shifter’s bushing and inner and outer boots have been replaced, too.
The 240Z was introduced to the American market by Yutaka Katayama, president of Nissan Motors USA operations, widely known as “Mister K,” in 1970. The early cars from 1969 to mid-1971 had some subtle differences compared to late-71 to 1973 cars. The most visible difference is; these early cars had a chrome 240Z badge on the sail pillar and two horizontal vents in the rear hatch below the glass molding providing flow through ventilation.
Binder of documentation and receipts; including 100’s of photos on a flash drive; lists of second and third owner modifications; paint and body modifications; items that were powder-coated; items chromed, professional services and more; original owner’s manual; original Datsun warranty card; original Datsun warranty and service booklet; original California DMV registration card; original cashier’s temporary receipt; original Hitachi AM radio operation guide; and original motor vehicle pollution certification of compliance.
Competition to this Datsun in 1971 included Chevrolet’s Corvette, Lotus’ Elan, Mercury’s Capri, Opel’s GT and Porsche’s 911.
If you owned one of these second-hand or your father or grandfather owned one when they were new, and you want to re-create that magic with the very best, then stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this Datsun 240Z. A pristine Series 1 example like this one will not hang around for long.
