Seller Description

From the Hamilton Triumph
Motorcycle Museum in Apache Junction, Arizona.
This beautiful 1971 Triumph
T120R Bonneville has been on display in our collection since 2012. It was restored by Jens Kjaer, of Racine,
Wisconsin.
It has a clear Washington
state title.
Here is Jens description of
the restoration he performed in 2012 …
“This 71 Bonneville has been
quite a project. I picked it up July of 2010 at the Mid Ohio swap meet. The
bike had been sitting in Hawaii since 1974. It had only 13,000
original miles on the odometer. From the minor left side damage, it looked like
it had been laid down in 1974 -- and never ridden since. Of course, the salt
water environment had taken its toll. Everything was covered with corrosion and
the motor was hopelessly seized. My work was cut out for me.
“The only reason I decided to take on the project is, in the mid
70's I had bought a stock 71 Triumph strictly as a parts bike. I still had
quite a few of those parts in stock and that took some of the parts hunt sting
out of the project. I was able to pick the best parts from my inventory to
build the bike.
“I started the restoration with
the intention of keeping everything original. Every nut and bolt would be taken
off and plated with cadmium or chrome. The engine would be completely rebuilt
and brought back to original condition. The frame was to be powder coated
and the paint would be original factory colors.

“Paint is original colors except
the hubs. After talking to Don Hutchinson and, on his suggestion, I went with
silver used on the 70 and earlier Triumph hubs. In his words, the 71 hubs and
brakes looked like they were sprayed with a cheap silver rattle can.
Motor Restoration
“The engine crankshaft was turned
.020 under and small end rod bushings were replaced and hand fitted. Both
drive and timing side bearings were replaced. All camshaft bushings were
measured and found to be within factory specifications. The cylinders were
bored .020 over and fitted with new 8.5:1 compression pistons. Headwork
includedall new valves, guides and springs. The valve seats received a 3
angle grind. The springs were shimmed to achieve exactly 75lbs. on intake and
87lbs. on the exhaust, as stated in factory specifications. The transmission
was inspected and found to be in excellent condition. Needle bearings, drive
bearings and seals were replaced.
“Engine cases, head and rocker boxes
were blasted with fine grit glass bead to remove salt water damage and achieve
the original look.
“All covers were sanded down
using progressively finer wet paper and a pneumatic polisher ending with a
finish using 2000 grit paper. This removed imperfections and salt damage.
Covers were then put through buffing steps ending with a final SemiChrome hand
rub.
Instruments, Controls, and
Electrical
“The speedometer and tachometer
were professionally restored and calibrated using all English parts.
“Cables were replaced to
original specifications. The main electrical harness was purchased from England
and had been fabricated to match the original design. All components of the
charging and ignition system were inspected and restored/replaced as required.
Wheels and Seat
“The wheels were restrung, trued
and balanced using original cadmium plated spokes and nickel plated nipples.
New Dunlop tires were used.
“The seat pan was reconditioned
and painted and, a new British seat cover was fitted.
General
“To sum up, this bike was
completely torn down, inspected and restored with attention to original
details. No modifications, or modern improvements were made that would deviate
from the original 1971 design.”
Before purchasing this T120R for
our collection we checked with VMCC and were informed …
“It’s a 1971 Model Year T120R.
Engine was built on 14th October 1970. The motorcycle was completed
7th December 1970 and dispatched to TC in L.A.”
This motorcycle has no miles since restoration but can easily be put
into riding condition with a new battery and fresh fluids.
