Seller Description
This is a very original, original paint AMF Harley Davidson XLCH Sportster. The bike has plenty of patina, also know as paint chips, scratches, minor dings, rust spots, fading chrome, etc.Regardless, the bike is in pretty good shape and looks good considering it’s 46 years old. This is a kick start bike only.It does start fairly easy.It is current licensed and on the road. It’s a daily around town rider. As far as I can see it is very original with the equipment installed at the factory.Exhaust system is original with original -65 mufflers. As stated paint is original. Not sure of its history, but I haven’t touched the motor or trans since purchased.Nice clean, matching numbers on engine and frame.Clear title in my name at my current address.Installed new tires a few years ago.1974 was the last year of the RH shift.1974 was the first full model production year for the newly opened in 1973 Harley factory in York Pennsylvania.1974 was the second year for a front disc brake on Sportsters.Rear brake is drum.Carb is original Bendix. The bike runs fairly good, typical for a bike of this age. Some fine tuning could make it better and smoother.I bought this bike a handful of years ago.I have a soft spot for old XL’s.I’ve owned many 900 and 1000cc Iron Head XL’s.As a young guy I’ve ridden Atlantic to Pacific and back twice, as far south as Ensenada Mexico and as far north as Central Canada on old Sportsters. Most recently I rode a 1965 XLH from Chicago to Sturgis. Many other trips that covered 43 states. The point of all this is that early Sportsters still have a lot of capability and are fun to ride. That stated a reality check indicates 1970’s XL’s are 55 mph bikes living in 155 mph world. While capable of serious performance these bikes are somewhat out of place on today’s roads where everyone drives “slowly” at 80 with a cell phone fused to their ear. Also the old t shirt slogan “Harley Davidson Motorcycles-Turns Ordinary Men Into Mechanics” had old Sportsters in mind. Not trying to scare anyone away, but if you are a newbie, old HD’s aren’t in the same class as new HD’s.They take a lot of patience and TLC.Talk to any old time biker and they can tell you all about it.I use this bike as an around town, country road rider. There are no guarantees or warranty on this bike.As mentioned it is 46 years old.No PayPal on this purchase. No deposit required. After the sale I’ll take any kind of legitimate check in payment but....Payment must be made well in advance of pickup. My bank must notify me of check clearance before the bike will leave my garage.Stated differently the buyer cannot show up at my house with payment of any kind and leave with the bike.I believe most people are totally honest but I have been involved with at least a dozen “half now, half never deals” over the years.Payment must clear prior to pickup.
Pickup and transportation is the responsibility of the buyer. If you have any questions or comments let me know.If you live in the Chicago area and want to take a look, let me know.If you are looking for an original, running, road worthy antique HD, and have the patience and ability to live with and ride an old bike, this might be a good call.
