Seller Description

This is a two owner Harley Davidson XLCR Café Racer. It was purchased new by the original owner in Van Nuys California in the summer of 1978 after it had been sitting in the dealership for a year. According to the original owner he rode it summers and put about 5,120 miles on it until he moved to Seattle in 1980, where it was stored indoors and hardly turned a wheel since the move from California. At the time I purchased it in 2015, it appeared to be all original except the license plate mount, battery, and tires. The original owner had changed the oil, put fresh gas in and charged the battery. When I picked it up it started and I road it onto the trailer. It had been cleaned it up a bit, but was still covered in dust. There was a tiny ¼ in scratch in the tank, a worn spot on the horn cover where the key ring hits, and other minor chips and scratches. The rear fender had been polished so much that the black is very thin on top with a small scratch on the left side and scratches on the battery side cover and AMF decal. The original owner told me the scratches on the side cover and decal was due to the cover falling off once during a ride.Since I purchased this XLCR it has gone through an extensive cleaning and detail. Once off the trailer I essentially performed the 5k mile maintenance, flushed out the tank, cleaned the fuel petcock filter, checked the timing,valve tappet adjustment, and changed the oil. The carburetor was gone through and seals replaced with New Old Stock (NOS) Harley Davidson carburetor repair kit 27006-76 (Note: I run the gas out of the carburetor, before I store it). The battery was replaced with an AGM battery and a new battery strap installed. A crack in the front fender fiberglass was repaired, re-enforced and repainted. The exhaust was removed and re-coated with ceramic high heat flat black paint, and even through I’m careful when I ride it, the left exhaust still has that legendary wear mark next to the shifter. The front tire was replaced with a correct size Dunlop Harley Davidson tire (unfortunately Dunlop does not make a Harley Davidson tire size for the rear).

After installing the front wheel, in my rush to test ride it the speedometer cable was not secure, as a result the cable was torn off the speedometer and the speedometer was damaged. So the original speedometer and tachometer were swapped out with NOS Harley Davidson gauges, the mileage shown on the new speedo today is 427.2 miles, that plus the 5,122.6 original miles is about 5,550.The speedometer, tachometer, and clutch cables have been replaced. New foam for the single seat. The rear brake master cylinder has been rebuilt and both stoplight switches replaced. The mileage is now about 5,550 miles and may be a bit more, because while it may look like a museum piece with a few imperfections, I do ride it on nice days.Today all the finishes are original except the front fender and exhaust. The black on the rear fender is still very thin and the scratches on the battery cover AMF decal are still there along with the horn cover wear mark. Even with the minor imperfections consider this exceptional shape for an original 43-year-old iconic motorcycle. This XLCR comes with the two-up rear pegs, double and single seats, original speedometer and tachometer, paperwork, parts manual, service manual, owner’s manual, warranty card (expired, no warranty expressed or implied), a voided copy of the original California title and registration.
