starter system that sounded like a bin full off spanners. The small 3 gal tank
limited its range. The cruiser bars, forward peg location and stiff seat foam
would give you monkey butt in less than 50 mi. These issues plus many more were
what I addressed in this build.

I was very inspired by the bike Classified Moto built for
Norman Reedus' character Daryl Dixon on the Walking Dead, but wasnt in the mood
to build an Apocalypse Rat Bike. My tastes lean more towards Greg Hageman's
Yardbuilt Gold Bolt. I'm a 30 yr master certified tech who refurbishes car /
bikes as a hobby.
Highlights of this custom build;
• Customized
mid-set foot peg setup with chrome Kuryakyn clevis mounts and bear trap style
dirt bike pegs for both rider and passenger. Two sets of pegs allow you to
bring a friend or change your foot position on the freeway for added comfort.
• Custom
gear shift bracket, lever, and linkage, to accommodate new peg location. Rear
brake pedal shortened also. Shift lever / linkage are from a 1998 Virago 1100,
easily replaced.
• Customized
5 gallon fuel tank from 1981 Yamaha Seca 650. Once I correctly fitted the tank
it was electrolysis de-rusted with washing powder, a sacrificial anode, and a
battery charger. It was then POR acid rinsed and resealed with POR-15 tank
sealer. I painted the tank and fenders with 5 coats of acrylic enamel Candy
Apple metallic red paint. Custom 1970’s DT350 graphic set. Dual manual petcocks
and 90 deg inline filters.
• Carburetors
rebuilt, re-jetted, and synched with Dynojet Stage 1 jet kit #4113. K+N air
filter, stock muffler baffles drilled out, (4) ½” holes. Motion Pro angled
stainless exhaust tips keep the side bags cool.
•New
Iridium spark plugs, engine compression is good, within spec. Valve lash
adjusted.
• Stock
seat pan shortened 2” to accommodate larger 5 gallon fuel tank. Seat foam
filled, pillion hump shaved to achieve a scrambler seat profile. New tan
aftermarket 1978 CB750 seat cover installed.
•1983
Yamaha Virago Midnight front and rear fenders, smaller and paintable.
• Battery
Tender BTL14A Lithium Battery with SAE charging pigtail. Leather tool pouch
serves as a battery box, still enough room for a tool kit.
• New
Arrowhead 4 brush starter #SMU0072 ensures rapid starts. New starter drive gear
return spring replaced with stronger aftermarket unit.
•Headlight
upgraded to H4 Silverstar, chrome headlight grill guard + black alum billet
guard.
•Aftermarket CREE U7 driving lights with LED Angel Eye halo, low/bright/strobe switch on
handlebar. These help prevent inattentive drivers from turning left or merging
in front of you.
•Aftermarket
LED turn indicators with rugged aluminum housings, LED brake light strip under
seat has strobe turn indicators. Back Off brake light strobe flashes both the
LED seat strip and LED brake light at license plate, keeps tailgaters awake and
off your butt.
•Genuine
leather saddle bags and aftermarket chrome hangers to prevent tire contact.
•Renthal
H971 bars, Renthal dual density superbike grips, Bandit 2” aluminum bar risers.
•Aftermarket
three-finger brake / clutch lever set, red anodized, adjustable. Bar-end cafГ©
mirrors.
•New
clutch pack; fibers, steels, springs. New oil/filter w/ Shell Rotella T6 10-40
Synthetic.
•New
clutch cable, tied to engine case with safety wire. This prevents pull-out on
full lock turns.
•Forks
rebuilt, new bushings, seals, boots, 10wt Motul oil, and stiffer Progressive
Suspension 11-1117 20.5" Fork Springs.
•Steering
Head rebuilt with All Balls stem bearing kit #22-1015 and new seals.
•Front
Brakes completely rebuilt; master cylinder and caliper overhauled with new seal
kits, Galfer stainless braided brake hose, new sintered brake pads, flushed
with new DOT4 fluid.
•Rear
wheel is 18” from a 1981 Yamaha Seca 650 which lowers the rpm at fwy speed by
500 rpm, this plus the XT-600 shock raises the rear suspension by 2”, this
decreases the rake angle and makes the steering lively, react faster.
•Rear
monoshock is 1” longer from a 1989 Yamaha XT-600 Tenere dual sport.
•Continental
TKC-80 tires, like new, 100/90-19 Front, 140/80-18 Rear. Extra wheel set and
road tires available at extra cost.
•Swing arm
and shaft drive lubed, cover repainted.
Known Issues;
•Slight
scuff marks in fuel tank paint (see pics) not deep, could be buffed out.
•Scuff
marks on seat cover from a boot being drug across it, barely noticeable.
•Paint
chipped on backside of front fender, touchup paint on order, horn relocated
higher.
•Slight
oil seepage at clutch actuator shaft, under gear shift lever, causes wisps of
smoke to come off exhaust pipe after riding. Not serious enough to cause
