Seller Description
1999 KAWASAKI DRIFTER 1500
One of the first 50 built, with special certificate, numbered handlebar clamp & press materials
The Drifter series, sold by Kawasaki from 1999 to 2006, is unique in that it began life as a magazine project bike that was then put into production. Back in 1996 former racer Don Emde, whose father Floyd was an Indian icon as first a racer and then a dealer, teamed with 'Rider' magazine and Ken Boyko of aftermarket firm Cobra Engineering to create the Super Chief, a modern take on the venerable Indian V-twin. Using a Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic as the starting point, master builder Denny Berg was charged with cloaking the Kawi in skirted fenders and other retro accouterments to come up with a very convincing 1940s Indian Chief lookalike. After the magazine article hit, response from the riding public was overwhelmingly positive, followed by an even stronger reaction from dealers when the bike was put on display at Kawasaki's U.S. dealer convention in Reno. At the time, retro-style bikes were all the rage so Kawasaki shipped the Super Chief over to Japan for evaluation. It returned in 1999 as a production version, the Drifter 1500.
This particular Drifter has been owned by Cobra's Ken Boyko from new. It is the last of an initial limited-edition 50-bike run before the model was put into series production, evidenced by its #00050 VIN number. Kawasaki provided those first 50 Drifter owners with a presentation box that included a Certificate of Ownership, a numbered upper handlebar clamp, a pewter key ring, a DVD video tape and an original brochure. Those items are included in this sale, as are an original Drifter 1500 press kit with news releases and multiple slides, plus a spiral notepad and an invitation to a dinner hosted by Kawasaki in honor of builder Denny Berg.In Boyko's care, the Drifter has covered just 1144 miles, and lately has been on static display. Tires and exhaust system are original fitment while the studded solo seat, leather gas tank strap and front light bar with twin spotlights are optional factory pieces. The original battery has been removed to prevent acid spillage and will need to be replaced. There are only a few minor cosmetic flaws -- some scratches in the front fender and boot scuffs to the clutch cover (see photos 22-24). In all other aspects this Drifter presents as-new and is a great example of a unique Japanese cruiser, owned by one of the men who helped create the bike. It is located in Costa Mesa, California, has clear title, and is available for inspection by appointment.
