Rare 1976 Alfetta GTAm Bathurst homologation special
This is one of the 25 Bathurst homologation specials built in 1976 to allow Alfa Australia to run a 2 Litre Alfetta GT at Bathurst 1976.
History of the Alfetta GTAm (GT America)In 1976 Alfa Australia wanted to run the new Alfetta GT at Bathurst to maximise the marketing benefit, however it was unlikely the 1800cc engined and heavier Alfetta GT would be faster than the existing 105 series 2 Litre GTV, and a 2 Litre engine for the Alfetta was some way away.
In true Bathurst tradition, Alfa Australia decided to homologate a “Bathurst special”, a limited run of 25 cars with the only 2 litre engine available in an Alfetta - the US 2 litre SPICA fuel injected engine -(hence the GTAm or GT America designation).Alfa took approx 25* June 1976 right hand drive Alfetta GT shells and fitted them with the USA motor, fitted a larger fuel tank mounted behind the rear seat (as they did in the USA) and shipped them to Australia. One of the cars went straight from the Alfa factory to Autodelta to be prepared as the Alfa Australia factory entry, the rest were shipped to Australia. Two others went to privateers for Bathurst preparation.(*we don't have a precise number - we think it was slightly more than 25. 25 were needed for homologation, but it's likely more than 25 were built probably so there were spares)
So three GTAM’s were entered for Bathurst 1976, the Autodelta prepared factory entry driven by John Leffler and Richard Carter, and the two private entries, a Brian Foley entry driven by Christine Gibson and Marie Claude Charnasson, and the Clemmens Sporting Cars entry with Frank Porter and Tony Roberts.
The Autodelta car went on to be campaigned by Gill Gordon Alfa and has been restored to as raced condition, the Foley entry (legend has it) went back to Foley's dealership and was sold off the lot (and is still unaccounted for) and the Clemmens carwhile competing in later yearswas written off against the old Dunlop bridge at Sandown, then stripped of parts & shell scrapped.
This CarThis car was parked in a dry barn in 1992 and was only recently rescued as part of a lot of stored cars from the same barn.
Most importantly, given it was parked in a dry barn, the body is in remarkable condition, with very little rust - which for an Alfetta GT is extremely rare.It is chassis number [hidden information], which is only one more than the Autodelta factory car, which was chassis number [hidden information].
The original SPICA engine has been replaced (as was the case with most GTAm's) with a 1.8 litre motor from a similar age Alfetta back in the day.
It may have also been used (or was prepared) for competition, although we know it's not the missing Foley car. The fuel tank has an unusual splitter to allow the addition of the standard underboot fuel tank for greater range. An unusual, period correct compettion harness was also fitted. It has all the fittings and features of having the fuel injected motor such as fuel return lines and fuel pump.It has the original Alfa steel wheels with pressed steel Alfa hub covers.
Alfetta GTAm's are few and far between and are a unique part of Alfa's racing heritage in Australia. This car, while needing a complete restoration is a great example (particularly the body) and would be a great restoration project. With prices for any classic Alfa appreciating quickly (look at 105 prices today) this is a great opportunity.
