The body of the E30 replaced the previous popular E21 body of the BMW's small third series in 1983. At first, the E30 was more of a revamped E21 than a completely new car and used mostly the same engines. The main design changes affected the front and rear suspensions and the ergonomics of the cabin. However, the company's designers are soWe did a good job on the exterior, that the magnificent proportions of the E30 still delight fans of BMW, and the style of this car has come to be considered classic.
In August 1986, fans of the brand were pleased with the appearance of the M3 model with an injection 200-horsepower 6-cylinder 2.3-liter engine. Although due to the obligatory catalytic converter and due to the increased resistance in the exhaust tract, the power turned out to be actually 5 hp. smaller. Externally, the M3 was distinguished by widened fenders with low-profile tires of the dimension 205/55 R15 and "developed"bumpers and sills. The value of accelerating dynamics (6.8 s to hundreds) has long become a dividing line, behind which real sports supercars have already begun. But the second-hand "emka" should be taken very carefully, because the lovers of "spur" in the majority of their driving accuracy do not differ (especially here, in Russia).
In mid-1987, the body underwent slight cosmetic changes. The radiator grill was slightly lowered, the chrome bumpers were replaced by more fashionable black (and later painted in the color of the car), the sizerear lights. Almost all cars after 1987 have power steering and a much softer accelerator pedal.
BMW models of the third series in September 1988 were restyled. New headlights were installed on the cars. The shape of the tail and rear lights has been modernized. In a wide range of engines, a new 100-horsepower 1.6-liter fuel-injected engine appeared, which did not differ in either fuel efficiency or acceleration dynamics. But the stiff suspension and the tachometer needle, jumping half a scale when you press the accelerator pedal, forcedI believed that "316i" is the brother of the M3, but very small and weak.
Since that time, the "emku" began to be produced in the form of a convertible. And only close to the end of production of the E30 did the Bavarians delight with the station wagon. True, the luggage compartment could not boast of a significant volume, but the car looked just great. Another rare modification - the 325iX with all-wheel drive - borrowed the transmission from the all-wheel drive "five" in the back of the E34. Diesel modifications of the sedan were also produced. All engines, in addition to manual 5-speed gearboxes, are equipped withor 4-band automatic hydromechanical transmissions.
The 325iS, produced in 1989-90, deserves special mention. The car was equipped with special plastic spoilers, bumpers and sills, suspension from the M3 and a sports interior.
Of course, the most remarkable car in the 30 body is the M3 of the Motorsport division for the FIA GT races. This model has gone through many modifications and has 3 evolutionary versions in order to meet the changing requirements of the FIA. At the same time, the M3 was also widely sold. The model wouldla stunningly successful, constantly occupying the top rows of tables. Paying tribute to the excellent qualities of the E30, it is still worth noting that for M3 Motorsport was forced to make a special suspension, similar in design to the fifth series (E28 body).
Initially, the younger E30 models used the old four-cylinder M10 engine, which was installed back in 2002 and E21. The M10 was then discontinued and replaced in 1987 by the M40 with a new injector and more power. But the real miracle was the appearance in 1989 of the M40 modification with the M42 code. This two-camshaft engineami and 24 valves were able to compete in power with the large M30 engines, squeezing out 140 hp. from all the same 1800 cubes and possessing unprecedented dynamics. The M42 remained in production until 1996.
Most of the older E30 models (320i, 323i, 325i) used the wonderful six-cylinder M20 engine, sharing it with the fives of the same years. This included the economical 325e with the low-revving 2.7-liter M20 / B27eta. The rare South African model 333i used the M30 "big six" engine from the 5/6/7 series. Cars with a diesel engine were also produced.m M21 (6 cylinders, 2.4 liters) with and without turbocharging.
Production of the M3 E30 coupe was discontinued in 1990 as a result of the 3 Series body change to the E36.
M3 - E36
Only in January 1992 were the two-door coupes 320i, 325i and M3 presented, and in September of the same year they were equipped with new engines with controlled valve timing. The M3 was somehow very briskly promoted in advertising by dealers, so it is better to refrain from buying a model before 1994. This car with developed sills and bumpers was sometimes, like the tuning versions, used incorrectly. M3 - E46
The coupe family is now headed by the recognized leader among the cars of this class, the M3. The world premiere of the cabriolet on the troika chassis took place in March 2000 at the Geneva Motor Show. The external resemblance of the convertible to the coupe is obvious, although the cars have different doors and rear fenders. The convertible has automatic rollover dosafety gi and a folding soft top that fits into a special volumetric container and can be dismantled. In the cold season, a hard top is installed, turning the car into a full-fledged coupe.
Since August 2000, the BMW M3 in the coupé and convertible versions has been offered with the second generation Sequential M gearbox (SMG II). It is a clutchless manual transmission, built according to Formula 1 technology and has an automatic gear shifting mode.
With the new BMW M3 CSL, the Bavarian company revivesthe tradition of the 70s in the construction of sports cars. Taking the M3 as a basis, BMW engineers replaced most of the body elements with lighter ones made of aluminum and composites. The most outstanding activity in the M3 diet program is the roof, which is completely made of carbon. Thanks to all these changes, the weight of the car was reduced by 110 kg - to 1.385 kg.
Engine performance has also been raised (from the standard 343 to 360 hp), and now there are 3.85 kilograms of the car for each "horse" under the hood of the car. However, the improvement in dynamic performance was not only a consequence of a decrease in vehicle weight and an increase in engine power, but also the use of a new sequential 6-speed Drivelogic gearbox. In addition, in order for the M3 CSL to unambiguously winI called "traffic light races" on the car put a Launch-Control system, similar to that used in Formula 1. Naturally, the brakes were also strengthened. In order to make the car more obedient, the car's track was increased by installing wider 19-inch wheels.
Sporty simplicity reigns in the cabin. No heated seats or navigation system. Audio system and air conditioner are listed in the list of optional equipment. But the car owner will receive luxurious sports seats and a salon, which the Bavarians have triedgive the maximum resemblance to a racing car.
The official debut of the new generation M3 coupe took place at the Motor Show in Frankfurt in September 2007. The production model was preceded by a concept presented at the Geneva Motor Show.
The new M3 is based on the 3 Series coupe but looks sportier. New features include a front spoiler, chrome air vents behind the front wheel arches, new exterior mirrors and four chrome tailpipes. In addition, the model is equipped with new 18-inch wheels and slightly increasedon in size.
The main thing is that now there are not six, but eight cylinders under the hood! The M3 is powered by a four-liter V8 petrol engine derived from the 5.0-liter V10 used in the M5. The engine produces 420 hp. at 8,300 rpm and a maximum torque of 400 Nm. Thanks to the use of the technology of variable valve timing Double Vanos, 85 percent of the torque (340 Nm) will be available from 2000 rpm, and the moment curve of the new engine itself has a smooth rise in the range from 2 to 6 thousand rpmov.
The engine is aggregated with a six-speed manual transmission. To "hundreds" of such a coupe accelerates in 4.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 kilometers per hour.
Outwardly, the M3 coupe, although it has something in common with a simple coupe, is very different from it. All design elements of the concept shown in Geneva have been retained. The new "emka" turned out to be bold and full of aggression, which is emphasized by the original front bumper with powerful air intakes, widened wheel arches, bumpertail section with a weighty diffuser and a small spoiler on the trunk lid, air "gills" on the front fenders. The picture is completed by different tires at the front and rear - traditionally, the rear wheels of the M3 are slightly wider than the front ones.
Following the debut of the BMW M3 coupe, the Bavarian automaker has officially presented the sports sedan of the same series. The four-door M car has returned to the BMW lineup for the first time since 1994. The sedan is designed on the same rear-wheel drive platform as the coupe, but additional two doors, a roomy trunk and dosTight space for rear passengers adds to its practicality. At the same time, the weight of the car increased slightly - up to only 1605 kg.
Under the hood is the same 4.0-liter V8 with 420 hp as the two-door version. The dynamics have slightly deteriorated. The car accelerates from zero to hundreds in 4.9 seconds.
