The 1974 energy crisis led Citroen to a significant decline in car sales, and the company was forced to enter new markets. In July 1976, after 13 months of tense negotiations, Citroen entered into an agreement with the Romanian government to create a joint automobile venture in Romania, and in December construction began in Craiova.

Initially, the car was conceived as a 5-door, but in order to save money, it was decided to stop at a 3-door version with a hatchback body, the gas tank was moved from theth side of the body to the left, and the clearance was increased due to the disgusting quality of Romanian roads. Production started in October 1982, the new car was called the Oltcit. Ceausescu's regime insisted that 40% of all components for it come from Romania and did not allow the transfer of foreign currency profits of the enterprise to France; Citroën was forced to sell Romanian goods received in payment for the cars sold in Europe. Along with other products, Oltcit cars were sold under the Citroën Axel name in France, the Netherlands.ah, Belgium, Austria and Italy, competing with each other in this market segment. The only difference between the brands was in the double chevron Citroen, located on the Axel grille.

This state of affairs could not satisfy Citroen, and in 1988 he left the organization, control over the enterprise remained with the Romanian government, but with the collapse of the regime, the production of the model was able to hold out for only a year and in 1990 it was completely stopped. Thus, the front-wheel drive minicar Citroen Axel was produced from January 1985 to August 1989.a.

The model had dimensions of 3720/1540/1420 mm with a base of 2370 mm and a curb weight from 820 to 875 kg, depending on the modification. The body was galvanized, and it was guaranteed against perforating corrosion for 6 years.

The interior was upholstered in fabric. The dashboard of the PRN type and the steering wheel with paddle shifters represented a proprietary Citroen design, which already at that time differed from other automakers in its technological and highly ergonomic design. PRN stands for Pluie (Rain), Route (Road), Nuit (Night) and was characterized by the fact thatAlmost all controls are grouped at the steering wheel, allowing you to operate them without taking your hands off the steering wheel. There was no need to reach out to turn any regulator or press a button. The paddle shifters contained 16 functions. The steering wheel was single-spoke, and some of the buttons could be pressed on the PRN panel directly in front of you by sticking your hand into the rim. Despite the superior ergonomics, conservative buyers have opted for more conventional controls and modern Citroens are now equipped with threeditional governing bodies.

Citroën Axel was produced in three versions: Axel, Axel 11R and Axel 12TRS. The first two were produced for the CMEA countries and were equipped with outdated Citroen air-cooled carburetor engines: respectively, a 2-cylinder boxer 0.652 liters (34 hp / 5500 rpm, 50Nm / 3500 rpm) and a 4-cylinder 8-valve boxer G11 / 631 with gas distribution system ohc 1.129 l (57 hp / 6250 rpm, 81Nm / 3500 rpm). The Axel 11R accelerated to 100 km / h in 15.4 seconds, had a top speed of 150 km / h and a combined fuel consumption of 7.6 liters. Axel 12TRS was equipped with a 4-cylinder 8-valve boxohm T13 / 65325 from Citroen GSA also with a gas distribution system ohc, with a volume of 1.299 liters (61 hp / 5500 rpm, 96/3250 Nm), gaining 100 km / h in 13.1 s, the maximum speed reached 157 km / h, and the fuel consumption is 7.3 liters in the combined cycle.

Axel and Axel 11R models were equipped with a 4-speed manual gearbox, and Axel 12TRS - 5МКПП. The front suspension was independent torsion bar, dependent on the rear. Front and rear disc brakes, standard tire size 135SR13 / 145SR13 / 160P340 for Axel / Axel 11R / Axel 12TRS, respectively, turning diameter was 9.1 m.

Low build quality and mediocre performanceThe characteristics were the reason for the weak interest in the Citroën Axel from the Western European buyer, only a very aggressive pricing policy could have contributed to some demand. On the other hand, Axel had significant success in Eastern Europe.
