The prototype of the Pontiac Bonneville, a full-size rear-wheel-drive luxury car with a transverse engine appeared in 1954. In 1957, serial production began, which continued at five US factories until 2005. In Canada, until 1981, it was known as the Pontiac Parisienne. Similar models were the Buick Lesabre and Chevrolet Impala. The successor to the model was the Pontiac G8.

In the first year of production, only 630 Bonneville units were assembled, making the surviving examples some of the most valuable to collectors. The car was equipped with a powerful 300-horsepower carburetv8 engine.

Between 1958 and 1961, a complete lineup was launched, including a 2-door convertible, a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan and a 4-door hardtop station wagon. The reduction in engine power took place as part of the implementation of the program to reduce harmful emissions, as well as the impending energy crisis. By the beginning of the release of the fifth generation Bonneville (1977-1981), its production remained at only three GM plants. The sixth generation Bonneville became mid-size, based on the GM G platform; the wheelbase has decreased to 2743 mm. From 1982 to 1986, the car was manufactured by the Canadian branch of GM in Saint-Teresa (Quebec). From the bodies remained a 4-door sedan and station wagon. 2.8L and 4.3L V6 petrol engines (Chevrolet) and 3.9 liters (Buick), as well as a 5-liter V8 from Chevrolet and a 5.7-liter V8 diesel from Oldsmobile were aggregated with automatic transmissions: 3-speed TNM200 and 4-speed 200-4R.

In 1987, Bonneville was again launched in the United States, now only in the sedan body. In 1992, the modernization of the model continued, and production ramped up. The release of the eighth generation Bonneville was carried out until February 1999. The car has become faster and, most importantly, safer; appeared in the standard equipment of the driver and passenger airbags, and as an option - ABS.

The year 2000 saw the launch of the new, ninth generation Pontiac Bonneville in SE, SLE and SSEi trim levels. The front-wheel drive 4-door 5-seater sedan had dimensions of 5145/1885/1440 mm with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and a track of 1590/1580 mm. Luggage volumeth department was equal to 510 liters.
