The company was founded in April 1937 to manufacture military aircraft. The idea to build cars was born after the war, when a small brigade of aircraft engineers led by Gunnar Ljungstrem was attached to the Sixten Sason technical design laboratory, one of Saab's divisions. The concept of G. Linström formed the basis of the first experimentala sample car (Saab 92.001), produced by the end of 1946 and belonging to the small class. The distinctive features of the Saabs immediately appeared here - a magnificent aerodynamic body (related to aircraft), independent wheel suspension. The first cars were equipped with two-piston engines of the DKW type, which were later replaced by more powerful engines.
Three years later, the first lineup of large sports "Saabs" was launched into production, consisting of two modifications: Saab Standart 92 and 92 DeLuxe.
In 1955, the new Saab 93 hastube tires and a new 3-cylinder engine.
From the next year, 1956, the Saab Sonett sports car appeared in the Saab range, which was designed as an open two-seat car of the highest class. Its body was made of fiberglass.
The successful 1959 Saab 95 wagon marked the beginning of the company's resounding commercial success, and the 1960 Saab 96 sold well throughout the 1960s. The company's fame at that time was also brought about by victories in international competitions: Eric Carlsson (Carlsson) for three years in a row - in 1960, 1961 and 1962 - won the Saab 96 model in the UKfirst stage of the World Rally Championship, and in 1962 and 1963 at the Monte Carlo Rally.
The company was a pioneer in many endeavors related to car safety: seat belts (1962), ventilated brake discs, impact-resistant door rails appeared here. The company's first priority is also to take care of all kinds of comfort for drivers and passengers: the 99 model is equipped with headlight wipers, heated seats and self-healing bumpers.
Since 1968 Saab has merged with a truck manufacturerIrma Scania-Vabis ("Scania-Vabis").
After 1971, when Blomqvist won two rounds of the world rally championship in the same Saab 99, the company's interest in sports cars faded and, with the exception of the Saab Sonett II, a two-seater designed exclusively for the American market, the company did not release not a single sports car. The company focused its efforts on improving the 99th model, which, starting with the model 900, introduced in 1978, is now considered a prestigious and very expensive car.silt. Since 1979, Saab has been collaborating with designers from Lancia.
The Saab 9000, whose concept was completed in 1984, marked a new, third milestone in the company's history.
In 1989, General Motors acquired a controlling (50%) stake in Saab, giving the corporation another entry into the European market.
At the 1997 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, a new version of the Saab 9000 was unveiled - the Saab 9-3. Also in 1997, the company introduced a completely new Saab 9-5, work on which began in 1993. ModernSaab's replacement vehicles are exemplary of "Scandinavian design" with its elegant simplicity. Aerodynamic lines make the company's cars recognizable in the modern "crowd". Another distinguishing feature of these "smart" machines is maximum convenience and ease of management. Although every time it seems that it is impossible to come up with more conveniences in a mass car, the designers of the company overwhelm the consumer every time.
In January 2000, Saab Automobile AB became wholly owned by General Motors Corporation.
