The history of the Octavia began in 1959. Then it was a simple, reliable car with a strong body and stable driving characteristics, with certain capabilities of that time, which earned many prizes at international competitions. The car has become popular not only in the "home" market, but also in Western Europe. The model was even exported to South America and New Zealand. Production lasted until 1964, when the brand new Skoda 1000 MB replaced the Octavia. Modification with a station wagon lasted for conveyere until 1971. The second time Octavia appeared only in September 1996 at the Paris Motor Show. Serial production began in 1997. This model was a kind of "maturity test" for Skoda. After all, the Octavia was the first completely new model created after the transfer of the company under the control of the Volkswagen concern. It was also an application for a seat in a higher class, where Czech cars had been completely absent for the last half century.

Octavia was warmly received by the audience. First, oprahhopes of buyers were given that with the coming to the management of the Germans, the cars of the Czech company would acquire real German quality. Secondly, an attractive price was set for the car.

In the year of its debut, the Octavia was presented only with a hatchback body, and two years later, sales of the station wagon began, which has the additional designation Combi in its name.

The Octavia is based on the platform of the well-known Golf IV. But at the same time, the Czech car is overgrown in the golf class, because in its dimensions it is very close tosegment "D".

The Octavia stands out with its very roomy trunk. Its volume in the hatchback is 528 liters, and with the rear sofa folded down - and at all 1330 liters. With the sofa folded down, the Combi can hold a whopping 1,512 liters, with a maximum load capacity of 540 kg. A little later, a 1.6-liter gasoline unit with a capacity of 101 hp appeared. In addition to these engines, the car was equipped with 1.8 liters (125 hp), and since 2000, a fundamentally new environmentally friendly 1.4l (75 hp).

It is especially worth highlighting the modification of the 1.8-liter turbocharged engine with the 1.8T index, developing 150 hp. This unit is very popular among drivers who prefer an active driving style.

With the launch of the station wagon, the line of power units was replenished with another 1.9 liter TDI turbodiesel (110 hp).

In 1999, the all-wheel drive modifications of the station wagon debuted (the hatchback began to be offered in the 4x4 version only a year later). They use the 4-Motion all-wheel drive system. In normal road conditions, it is all directed to the front wheels, but as soon as they begin to slip, it immediately partially spreads to the rear.

It should be noted that only cars with the most powerful engines - 1.8T gasoline and turbodiesel - were equipped with all-wheel drive. Even all-wheel drive versions have a different rear suspension - an independent multi-link.

Also in 1999, the line of power units was replenished with a new gasoline 2.0-liter engine with 115 hp.

In 2000Octavia has undergone a facelift and received an updated appearance: slightly enlarged headlights, a different radiator grill and new bumpers. Unlike the hatchback, the station wagon has the same taillights. The interior was also upgraded - the design of the rear seat was changed, resulting in an additional 40 mm for the rear passengers' legs. In 2001, the "charged" all-wheel drive version of the RS debuted with an uprated 1.8-liter 20-valve engine, developing 180 hp.

In 2004, Skoda introduced the second generation Octavia... The car was generously awarded with advanced technologies used by its German counterparts: engines with direct injection FSI, a robotic 6-speed DSG gearbox and a new multi-link rear suspension.
