The BMW Z1 is a two-seater roadster developed by and manufactured by BMW Technik GmbH from July 1988 to June 1991. One of the most interesting projects of the concern. The first Z1 was shown to the press in 1986 and officially presented at the 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show. The development of the car was carried out for more than three years by an internal BMW division under the direction of Dr. Ulrich Bez. In October 1988, after Ulrich Bies left for Porsche, the project was taken over by Dr. Klaus Faust. The interest in the new car was so greatthat the company received about 5 thousand orders even before the start of its production. The first Z1 roadsters, in which a significant part was made by hand, were handed over to customers in January 1989. At the same time, the base price of DM 80,000 provided exclusivity. The modern design of the Z1 was years ahead of its time.

Designers used the most extraordinary engineering solutions to create this model. The body was a monocoque made of hot-dip galvanized forged and welded sheet steel with a bottomsandwich type constructions. The entire outer cladding consisted of screwed-on plastic elements. A special feature of the design is the unusual doors that are removed into the threshold of the car at the touch of a button (including when driving).

The roadster was powered by a 170-horsepower 2.5-liter inline six-cylinder engine from the BMW 325i. It was located behind the front axle. Acceleration from standstill to 100 km / h took 7.9 seconds and top speed was an impressive 225 km / h. Torque was transmitted to the rear wheels using a five-speed gearbox...

The sport-tuned suspension consisted of a front suspension with shock absorbers from the BMW 3 Series and a completely new, so-called Z-shaped rear suspension. In the basic configuration, all 4 wheels were equipped with disc brakes.

In the process of creating the machine, the company received patents for several of the latest technologies. According to the developer Harm Lagaay, in particular, the Z1 developed technologies for creating xenon lamps, an integrated frame, a door mechanism and a pallet.

The car was produced for only 3 years... The model can be attributed to exclusive, because it was released in extremely small circulation (8,000 copies).

Many tuning ateliers, dealing with BMW, have introduced into their lineup services for finishing the Z1 - from "tuning" a serial motor to implanting a new one. For example, Kelleners-sport in 1995 offered its customers to install an "S50" series motor from the M3 3.0 E36 model on the Z1. The upgrades also affected the steering, cooling and suspension systems. If the customer wanted more than 286 hp, there were two options for further refinement. First. Installing a specialnormal exhaust system and reprogramming of the engine control unit. This gave an increase of 7 hp. Second. Includes the first stage, in addition: replacing the camshafts with new ones that provide greater valve travel, reprogramming the engine management system again, installing forged pistons, increasing the compression ratio, processing the cylinder head. The result is 330 hp.
