The BMW Z4 Roadster is an open-air two-seater that replaces the Z3 Roadster. Compared to its predecessor, the Z4 has grown slightly in all directions. Like its predecessor, the BMW Z4 is produced in the USA at the Spartanburg plant. The roadster went on sale in the United States in October 2002, and did not appear in Europe until March 2003.

The BMW Z4 is a classic roadster with a sporty character. Shark features are manifested in the design of the car: the toothy "jaws" of the false radiator grille, the heavy gaze of the headlights, the faceted long "muzzle". Convex and concave surfaces create a magnificent play of light and shadow. The BMW Z4 has a waist. It is formed by "sunken" doors, behind which the body seems to expand. The notch on the door from above is limited by a clear edge of the belt line, and from below - by an equally sharply outlined "stiffening rib" of a high threshold. The picture is completed by a slash, boldly drawn from the bottom up from the front wheel to the windshield frame. And in the middle of this slanted rib there is a blue and white BMW emblem, under which an orange turn signal repeater is hidden. CharacterThe BMW radiator grille, surrounded by shiny chrome and optional dual xenon headlights with integrated fog lights, gives the Z4 an elegant and energetic look. The Z4 2.5i comes standard with an elegant, power-operated fabric tarpaulin. Electric tarpaulin (optional on 2.5i and standard on 3.0i) opens in just 10 seconds.

The main "forming surface" of the interior is the "curved-concave" front panel. All the information you need is right in front of your eyes thanks tochronograph style accessories. Advanced Navigation System with 16x9 Display - Non-reflective TFT Monitor (optional) - pops up from the instrument panel by pressing a dedicated button. The steering wheel is small, okay, with a leather rim and incredibly stylish metallic spokes. The design in the BMW Z4 is at a height, every detail has been worked out - whether it be the protective arches behind the seats, the handbrake handle or the door panels, "crossed out" by special "twisted" handles. The interior of the sports version with "metal"trademark. Sport seats for driver and passenger are standard on the Z4. In the Comfort version, only natural wood inserts create some warmth, replacing the silver plastic panels for aluminum. Otherwise, everything is extremely restrained, technologically advanced and “sterile”. Not a single superfluous, pretentious detail, but each of the available ones is perfect in its completeness and functionality.

The advantage of the new body is the relatively large trunk (up to 260 liters) with a convertible tarpaulin compartment,which is enough to carry two large bags. The fabric canopy folds in a Z-shape and has a heated rear window.

Additional options include a Hi-Fi audio system with Carver bass booster and a dedicated telephone. The new Z4 comes standard with a sporty leather steering wheel, roll-over protection system and tires that allow you to get to the tire shop on your own in the event of a puncture.

A high-octane blend of impeccable quality and state-of-the-art technology lies at the heart of theove the work of the six-cylinder BMW Z4 engines, made of a special lightweight alloy. The combination of the unique Double Vanos system for optimal valve regulation, a dedicated air intake module and BMW four-valve technology has achieved the highest torque and lightning-fast response. When activated in Sport mode, the optional Driving Dynamic Control takes engine power to an even higher level.ny. The Z4 models are equipped with the 3.0i engine (170 kW / 231 hp / top speed 250 km / h) and the Z4 2.5i (141 kW / 192 hp / 235 km / h). The Z4 3.0i has a six-speed manual transmission and a five-speed for the Z4 2.5i, or a five-speed automatic transmission (optional).

Thanks to its wide track, low center of gravity, optimal weight distribution on the axles in a 50:50 ratio and precise steering (Electric Power Steering), the BMW Z4 provides good driving dynamics.b and manageability. In addition, durable, high-performance brakes and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC III) with traction control mode ensure maximum driving safety in all driving situations.

On the Z4, for the first time in the history of BMW vehicles, the conventional power steering has been replaced by an electric power steering. This arrangement is much simpler. The electric power steering only consumes energy when you turn the steering wheel, it is very easy to control its operation in accordance with the speed orwith the level of lateral accelerations. But if behind the shoulders of the engineers of BMW and the company ZF, which traditionally supplies steering mechanisms to the Bavarians, there are decades of experience in tuning the reactive action of hydraulic boosters, then with electric motors everything will have to be comprehended anew. The Z4 Sport is extremely responsive to even the smallest steering movements. And pressing the "sport" button on the console to the left of the gear lever changes not only the characteristics of the "electronic" gas pedal, but also the algorithm of the electric power steering. It's better to ride in "sport", but not much. HaveIe on the steering wheel is higher, but there is still no "transparency". The reactions are immediate, but not accurate - you have to correct the trajectory in high-speed turns with fast impulsive movements. But in turns, the BMW Z4 is no slower than the Speedster. First, the power unit here fully justifies this definition: it really is power. The traction "at the bottom" is powerful, and after 3000 rpm pressing the gas pedal instantly causes a jet push in any gear! The chassis here, whatever you say, is excellent. Tires with a death grip cling to the asphalt, the geometry of the suspensions allows the roadster to follow the wheel with ease and willingly dive into high-speed turns. Gradually you get used to the reactions of the car, and the only annoying thing is the need to rest your knee on the door handle in a left turn.

The brakes are great. The effort on the pedals and its stroke are selected so that they make it easy to brake just on the verge of blocking - that is, you squeeze the maximum deceleration out of the car without activating the ABS! And how is the "driver" electronics tuned ... The DSC stabilization system prevents slippingunobtrusive, but imperious and confident. Contrary to all motorsport canons, the BMW Z4 can safely press on the gas or slow down in a corner - the computer will instantly remove excess traction or recalculate the required balance of braking forces on each wheel. In this case, a single press of the DSC button does not turn off the stabilization system, as usual, but activates DTC - Dynamic Traction Control. As the Bavarians say, this is some kind of compensation for the lack of a self-locking differential on the Z4 - activation of the DTC allows some "controlled" slipdriving wheels. But with the development of a skid, the electronics immediately "wake up" and pulls back the driver. The "asphalt" roadster is not designed for rally driving techniques!

The Sport version has a very stiff suspension. The bass sound of an in-line "six" fills the interior - even an open one with a folded roof. If the voice of the engine was a little louder, you could call it intrusive ... A ride in the "comfortable" version evokes more pleasant emotions. On 16-inch wheels instead of 17-inch, without the "sport" button. On the turns of the steering wheel of the roadster reagirit is calmer, the exhaust sound is not so aggressive, the suspension “swallows” bumps noticeably softer. Such a car is more predictable and understandable!

Perhaps the flaws in the behavior of the "sports" roadster are largely due to the other wheels. For example, on longitudinal waves of asphalt, the steering wheel of a car with a "sports" suspension begins to tilt towards the inclination - this happens when, due to the installation of wheels with a different offset, the so-called run-in shoulder of the steered wheels changes. A "comfortable" roadster on the same slopeKoino drives straight without reacting to the road profile. And the BMW Z4 3.0i Comfort is hardly slower than the "sports" version.

By the way, despite the "fast" rack and pinion steering gear with a very low gear ratio (14.2), the steering wheel on the Z4 from lock to lock makes more than three turns. As a result, the front wheels turn at a very large angle. The turning circle, respectively, of the roadster is less than ten meters - excellent maneuverability!
