Under the name Chevrolet Lumina, in 1989, two completely different cars from the Chevrolet company (a division of General Motors) were presented, namely: a sedan and a minibus (Chevrolet Lumina APV). Initially, consumers were a little embarrassed that two completely different cars bore the same name (Chevrolet Lumina sedan and Chevrolet Lumina APV minibus). This lasted until 1997, when the Chevrolet Lumina APV was renamed the Chevrolet Venture. Prior to the release of the "civilian" version of the Chevrolet Lumina, this was the name used by Chevrolet's race cars at NASCAR races in 1989.

The Chevrolet Lumina, in the 1990 model year, replaced the Chevrolet Celebrity sedan and coupe and the Monte Carlo coupe. The Lumina was manufactured at the Oshawa Car Assembly in Ontario, Canada. The Chevrolet Lumina was developed on the W-platform from General Motors, which was used in cars such as the Pontiac Grand Prix, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Oldsmobile Intrigue, Buick Regal and Buick Century (after 1996). The mid-size car, at that time, was offered in two body styles: a 4-door sedan and a 2-door coupe.

In the period from 1990 to 1994. three engine options were proposed for the Chevrolet Lumina: Iron Duke I4 with a volume of 2.5 liters (from 1990 to 1992), a LHO V6 with a volume of 3.1 liters (from 1990 to 1994) and a top-end DOHC LQ1 V6 with a volume of 3.4 liters (from 1990 to 1994). There were four transmission options: a 5-speed manual transmission, a 3-speed 3T40 automatic transmission, and two 4-speed automatic transmissions (4T60 and 4T60-E).

The top version of the Chevrolet Lumina from 1991 to 1994. was the Z34 model. She had a special package of options, which included: the top-end version of the engine (DOHC LQ1 V6 with a volume of 3.4 liters), the power of which was 210 hp. at 5200 rpm, and the maximumtorque - 292 Nm at 4400 rpm; unique external elements (rear spoiler, moldings, hood with "gills"); unique steering wheel. The radiator grille has been replaced with a body-colored panel similar to that found on the Ford Taurus SHO.

In 1995, the Chevrolet Lumina underwent major external changes, and the coupe version was renamed the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. In the list of proposed engines, the 3.1-liter LHO V6 has been replaced by the 3.1-liter L82 V6 (also known as the 3100 SFI). All engines included a 4-speedautomatic transmission 4T60-E.

In 1996 (after the Chevrolet Caprice was discontinued) special versions of the Chevrolet Lumina were developed for police and taxi services.

In 1997, a sports version of the Chevrolet Lumina, called the LTZ, was launched to provide an alternative to the discontinued Impala SS and Chevrolet Caprice. The LTZ was distinguished by a package of options, which included: an optional 3.4-liter LQ1 V6 engine; unique alloy wheels; a tachometer appeared on the dashboard; the gear lever on the floorova. In the same year, the L36 V6 engine with a volume of 3.8 liters appears, which replaces the previously proposed power unit LQ1 V6 with a volume of 3.4 liters, and the 4T60-E transmission was replaced by the newer 4-speed "automatic" 4T65-E.

On April 26, 2001, the production of the Chevrolet Lumina was discontinued. In Asian countries, it continued to be sold under the Buick brand (Buick Century / Regal). And in Latin America, Lumina was sold under the name Omega.
