The XJ Sedan is a legendary car from Jaguar. Today, the history of this model has already spanned seven generations. The very first Jaguar with the XJ index - the Jaguar XJ6 - was shown to the public on September 26, 1968. Sir William Lyons, founder of the company, personally presented the novelty in Birmingham. The number in the name indicated the number of cylinders of the engine, and the letters "X" and "J" remained from the name of the project "eXperimental Jaguar". The XJ series earned the reputation of being a "true Jaguar" and enjoyed great popularity despite its impressive price tag. In the basic versionAi with a 2.8-liter, 6-cylinder, twin overhead camshaft, the Jaguar XJ6 cost £ 1,800. The version with an automatic transmission and a 4.2 liter engine cost much more at £ 2,400. With the latest power unit, the Jaguar XJ6 developed about 200 km / h, and acceleration to "hundreds" took just under 9 seconds. Choice of transmission: 4-speed gearbox (some models additionally had an overdrive unit) or 3-speed automatic. Independent suspension of all wheels, with the main focus on efficient geomethree of its levers, eliminated the "dive" when braking.

In October 1972, a long-wheelbase model was released, called the XJ6L. It featured a more spacious rear passenger compartment. The Jaguar XJ6 has won numerous awards including Car of the Year. It was made in the best conservative traditions of its predecessors. Combines Rolls-Royce sophistication, Jaguar throttle response and the road holding characteristic of a sports car.

First generation pro releaselasted until 1973.

The Jaguar XJ6 of the second series is hardly a completely new car. It is more of a deep facelift product. First of all, its need was dictated by the fact that new safety standards came into force in the United States, providing for a higher location of the bumper (cars of the first years of production had a lowered bumper). Hence - and the reduction of the radiator grille. The interior has also changed along the way. In particular, the instruments were now in front of the driver's eyes, and not in the central part as before. ChromeMoreover, it was decided to abandon the 2.8-liter engine, as well as to discontinue the production of "short-base" versions.

In January 1974, a car with two doors of the "coupe" type was released, which received the designation XJ6C. And in April 1975, the XJ6 model appeared with a 3.4 liter engine, the cylinder block of which was much better able to withstand the effects of torsional vibrations.

The second-generation Jaguar XJ6 was discontinued in 1979. For the first time in the brand's history, the styling of the third-generation XJ6 was outsourced to a third-party studio. Over designthe renowned studio Pininfarina worked. The glazing area has increased, which significantly improved the visibility, the roof line has changed. Despite the fact that outwardly the car turned out to be even more impetuous, there is more space above the heads of the rear passengers. The sleek exterior and thoughtful details such as a new electric sunroof and alloy wheels have made the XJ6 Series III one of the most desirable cars in the luxury car market.

On the six-cylinder versions, instead of the four-speed, a five-speed manual began to be usedI have a gearbox, and engines with a volume of 4.2 liters began to be equipped with fuel injection.

In 1983, it was decided to give the most luxurious versions of the Jaguar XJ the Sovereign name.

The debut of the fourth generation took place in 1986. The Jaguar XJ6 features an improved 24-valve AJ-6 aluminum engine with two camshafts and four valves per cylinder and a more advanced electronic control system that includes an on-board computer. As an alternative to the AJ-6 engine, an upgraded 2.9-liter engine was offered, however, still with onecamshaft and two valves per cylinder. In 1990, the 3.6-liter engine gave way to a four-liter engine, and a little later the volume of the "small" engine was increased from 2.9 to 3.2 liters. Since 1993, special orders have begun to produce cars with an increased wheelbase.

In 1994, the fifth generation saw the light. The design of the XJ6 from this period was called "retrolling". The car was offered with six-cylinder engines of 3.2 and 4.0 liters. In 1995, the new Jaguar XJ began to be put on a "long base".

In 1997, the Jaguar XJ of the sixth century appeared.tions, but the six-cylinder engine was no longer in the line of power units. The Jaguar XJ6 has been replaced by the XJ8.
