2020 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross Exceed AWD

Pages: 1

Mitsubishi Eclipse debuted in 1989. The first generation was indexed 1G. The Eclipse was built on the basis of the famous Galant VR-4 that brought fame to the Mitsubishi rally team in the early 90s. The car was mainly aimed at those who like to drive fast, who cannot afford expensive sports cars. The idea turned out to be successful, the market accepted the novelty with a bang.

The dynamic coupé 2-door body, the rising headlights and the elegant rear wing underline the sporty character of the vehicle. The salon of the first Eclipse was designed for two adultss passengers. Moreover, thanks to the wide range of adjustments in the driver's seat and the height-adjustable steering column, even a tall person could comfortably sit behind the wheel. But behind the usable space is clearly not enough.

Despite the fact that the Mitsubishi Eclipse is smaller than the Galant (4340 / 1690/1300 versus 4540/1695/1400), it is slightly heavier - 1215 and 1185 kg, respectively, due to the reinforced body designed to carry serious loads and a roll cage around the perimeter. Stiffening beams are installed inside the doors, under the headliner and dashboard, there is a longitudinal beam under the bottom of the body, and the front and rear bumpers are mounted on special shock absorbers, the purpose of which is to extinguish the impact energy in collisions.

Under the hood, Eclipse placed a unique at the time 4G63 four-cylinder engine in three versions. The naturally-aspirated 92-horsepower 1.8-liter was underpowered for a 1215-kilogram car with a clear pretense of sportiness. Acceleration to "hundreds" was as much as 11 seconds. 2.0-liter 140-horsepower (base version front-wheel drive) and finally the same, but already turbocharged.

From Galant dremained the same transmission, electronic circuits and engine control unit.

Rack and pinion steering, equipped on all versions with a hydraulic booster, sharp and precise, provokes an active drive. The Eclipse's suspension is moderately stiff and holds the car well even when maneuvering at high speeds, aided by the powerful front and rear anti-roll bars. The car's suspension has received the special name Multi-Link. In all-wheel drive versions, a complex multi-link, passive steering wheel was used at the rear.suspension bracket.

It is noteworthy that the first generation Eclipse had a rather high ground clearance for cars of this class - 160 mm.

All versions have been fitted with ABS as standard since 1992. At the same time, in the American versions, they began to abandon the opening front optics.

The second, very seriously updated generation of Eclipse under the 2G index appeared in 1995.

The range of power units has been reduced - the 1.8-liter engine has been excluded. The 2-liter naturally aspirated engine was left unchanged, but the power of the turbocharged versionraised from 195 to 213 hp As before, front- and all-wheel drive modifications were produced.

In 1996, the Spyder convertible was added to the family in two versions: a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter engine (GS grade) and a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine (GS-T).

In 1997, the Mitsubishi Eclipse underwent minor changes. Most notable was the new, high-mounted spoiler on the GS-T and GSX models. These powerful versions also received a new front bumper with a large air intake and other fog lights, plus 17-inch wheels inamen 16-inch.

Slightly modified the front by changing the style of the fog lights. The computer and the engine control program were completely "altered".

The second Eclipse was made in the best traditions of biodesign. Not a single edge, everything is smooth and round.

In 1998, the Mitsubishi SST concept was shown at the Detroit Auto Show. The striking coupe showcased a new design direction called geomechanical styling. And in 2000, a production car appeared based on the concept, which is sometimes called 3G.

Successor to Mitsubishi EclThe second-generation ipse is leaner, with raised sidewalls and accentuated wheel arches. The oblique headlights and taillights were replaced by optics, in the forms of which a triangle prevails, the silhouette has become even more impetuous.

The body, as before, has a seating formula of 2 + 2, however, in the new model, which has increased both in length and in width, there is more space for rear passengers, now it can accommodate two adults of average height.

The range of power units is represented by an atmospheric 2.4-liter four (149 hp) and a 3-liter V6 (203 hp) in a complectations GT. Despite the more aggressive forms, Mitsubishi engineers abandoned the all-wheel drive variation for this generation.

To please the American consumer, the chassis design was simplified, in particular, the multi-link front suspension gave way to a simpler McPherson scheme.

The name "automatic" Sportronic does not reflect its essence: there is nothing sporty in it, despite the presence of a sequential choice of steps: it has only four gears.

The interior design is very interesting. The instrument panel with separate uk wells is especially originalfuel level gauges and coolant temperature gauges. Driver's seat with leather upholstery and electrically adjustable.

In the third generation, the "bio" design changed to "techno", which was emphasized by three parallel stamping on the sidewalls.

In 2001, on the basis of the new Eclipse, they began to produce the Spyder, which was presented at the Detroit Auto Show. There was also a "charged version" - Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT with a V6 engine (3.0 l. 147 hp), the basic configuration of which includes full power accessories, air conditioning, cruise control, anti-testscoop system and 17-inch alloy wheels. In the top version of the GTS, the power of the 3.0-liter V6 is increased to 210 hp.

In 2004, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Concept-E, the forerunner of the fourth generation of the Eclipse, was shown in Detroit. It is worth noting that despite its futuristic appearance, the appearance of the concept car noticeably overlaps with the latest generation Mitsubishi Eclipse.

This also applies to the shape and location of the headlights, and the characteristic line of the C-pillar, which flows smoothly into the body. Meanwhile, eleThe elements of the brand's new corporate identity are the large Mitsubishi emblem and a different design of the rear part of the body. In addition, the Eclipse Concept-E boasts a huge glass sunroof.

However, the most interesting thing about the conceptual novelty is hidden under the body panels. This is the latest hybrid powertrain dubbed the E-Boost. In normal mode, the Eclipse Concept-E is powered by a new 3.8-liter V6 engine with a new variable valve timing system, which produces about 270 hp.

When you need to quickly accelerateIn fact, the electronic system connects a 200-horsepower electric motor that drives the wheels of the rear axle. The total power of the power plant reaches 470 hp.

In addition, this system can replace (in a sense) also the all-wheel drive system. Another advantage of E-Boost is that it is much more economical than conventional motors with the same power output.

It is difficult to pass by the Mitsubishi Eclipse indifferently - this car stands out from many others of its kind with its original design.
