The car was designed by a team of engineers in the Australian branch of Holden of General Motors under the leadership of Peter Hughes: the first prototype named Chevrolet YGM-1 was born back in 1999. The car is based on the Suzuki Wagon R + platform, known in Europe as the Opel Agila.

Just a year later, the car began to be sold on three continents at once. In Australia - like the Holden Cruze, in Japan - like the Chevrolet Cruze, in Europe - like the Suzuki Ignis. The word Ignis translated from Latin means "fire" or "light".

The car was produced in 3 or five doorsm body option. Despite its compact size, there is enough space inside to accommodate five passengers. The salon is easily transformed to carry long items and has a rich set of functional little things, such as drawers under the seats, cup holders, several "glove compartments" and even a voluminous removable "cache" under the boot floor. The rear seats can be folded 50/50.

The first generation Suzuki Ignis was produced in two versions: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.

Ground clearance175 mm and all-wheel drive allow the car to feel confident not only on asphalt, but also on unpaved surfaces. True, Ignis is not designed to overcome serious off-road conditions, since the transmission does not have a differential lock or a "transfer case" with a lower gear.

The main driving force is an economical 1.3-liter 16-valve engine with 83 hp. The power unit was offered in tandem with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.

For the safety of passengers, Ignis isas well as inserts in the doors to protect against side impacts, an immobilizer and two airbags.

However, for all the extraordinary appearance of the first generation, there was clearly not enough brightness. And in the spring of 2003, the world saw the new Ignis in Switzerland. Its creators made an attempt to combine the qualities of a small passenger car, a utility wagon and an off-road vehicle in one car. An excellent hybrid for moving in the harsh conditions of a big city.

The second generation Suzuki Ignis differs from the predecessor model, first of all, a new designdnom body. The car began to look more modern due to the smooth lines of the body, as well as new vertical headlights. In addition, there was a modified radiator grille and a new massive front bumper, with integrated fog lights.

The proportions of Ignis are very good from the point of view of rationality. The car is only 3.77 meters long and may well claim to be the smallest SUV in the world. Ground clearance of 170 mm and small overhangs allow him to safely climb any curbs. By the way, in comparison with the first generation, the clearance of the new Ignis has decreased.

Due to the high seating position and the large glass area, the interior turned out to be very sunny and with good visibility. The finish is very solid: unpretentious plastic in texture and dark monochromatic fabric upholstery. Everything looks modern, nice and leaves a favorable impression. The three-spoke steering wheel is comfortable in girth and pleasant to the touch. True, the steering column is rigidly fixed - it is not adjustable either in the angle of inclination or in the departure.

Steering column switches, control unitThe lights and exterior mirrors are taken from the European relative of the Opel Astra. In front of the driver's eyes is a sports dashboard with white dials and red illumination recessed into separate silvery wells. The front seat has three mechanical settings: longitudinal, backrest tilt and cushion height. This allows you to get comfortable behind the wheel, and the logical arrangement of the controls is the key to good ergonomics.

The trunk is small - only 236 liters. It can be increased to 1002 liters by folding the rear seat, but evenThe second floor will not work. And the modest tailgate and large loading height make it difficult to transport large items.

The powertrain lineup offers a choice of three engines. These are two petrol engines, 1.3- and 1.5-liter, equipped with variable valve timing, as well as a new 1.3-liter turbodiesel.

Front wheel drive car. However, there may be a 4x4 wheel arrangement, however, it is provided only for the most powerful and expensive version with a 1.5 liter engine. In this configuration, Ignis turns into a real gift for ljubilees of active rest. Quite stiff, but "capacious" suspension makes the car repeat in detail the vertical profile of the road, but does not allow to roll too much in corners. Brakes - quite, especially taking into account ABS with EBD and "emergency brake" are already in the basic configuration.

The standard equipment of the Suzuki Ignis offers a 94-horsepower engine, anti-lock braking system, front airbags, central locking, front power windows, electric power steering, a set of acoustics, paintedbody-colored bumpers, air conditioning, electrical adjustments, heated rear-view mirrors, fog lights, heated front seats.

The High trim adds 16-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, puffy wheel arch liners, a rear spoiler and a display on the dashboard to the basic equipment.

So the new Ignis is easy to operate, good visibility, practicality, high ground clearance and a nice, extraordinary appearance. The new Suzuki is close in spirit to such fashionable cars today, combining the advantages of different classes.in, which are called crossovers.
