Alfa Romeo 75.

In May 1985, in the year of the 75th anniversary of Alfa Romeo, a new flagship model of the company, the Alfa 75, was released, replacing the 2nd generation Giulietta. This was the last rear wheel drive model produced by Alfa Romeo.

The design of the 75 was developed by a group of designers under the leadership of Ermanno Cressoni and represents a compromise between the forms of the Alfa 33 and Alfa 90. The task of the designers was to create a car with pronounced sports features, but without excessive aggressiveness. The result is a rather original typical Italian design of the car.

To the start of production,September 1985, 4 versions of the 75th were released, equipped with the following engines: 1.6 liters (110 hp), 1.8 liters (119 hp), 2.0 Twin Spark (128 hp) and a turbodiesel 2.0 (95 HP). For the American market, the 75 Alfa was delivered under the Milano name. They were slightly different. So a 1.8 liter (150 hp) engine was installed on the Milano, which had a turbocharger and a catalyst (the catalyst was simply necessary, since the car had to undergo strict certification for export to the American market). Externally, the 75 and Milano did not differ much (the Milano had different bumpers). Due to the unprofitable production of Milano in 1989Milano was discontinued.

Since February 1986, for the 75th, the production of a new V6 Basso design with a volume of 2.5 liters begins. Since April 1987, the Alfa 75 begins to be equipped with the next version of the V6 - with a volume of 3 liters and a capacity of 188 hp. At the same time, the 75s began to install 2.5 Twin Sparks with a capacity of 145 hp. with an adjustable catalyst. In September 1987, the export of the Alfa 75 to the United States began under the Milano name. A new version of the car with a 1.8 America engine (150 hp) with turbocharging and a catalyst was specially developed for this. Milano and regular versions of the 75th were assembled on different convoyseier, but outwardly differed only in the shape of the front bumper.

From 1987 to 1989, Milano was produced in 4 versions Silver, Gold, Platinum, QV. The Milano is in all respects considered the best version of the Alfa 75. This is confirmed by the fact that foreign cars had to pass rather stringent tests to obtain admission to the US domestic market. At the end of 1989, due to the unprofitability of production, the production of Milano was discontinued.

In June 1989, a small restyling of the model was made, externally this was expressed in a slight change in the front of the body.a. At the same time, a rather rare version of the 75th -75 Lusso with a 3.0 i Veloce engine was released.

Since the fall of 1989, versions 1.8 and 1.8 ie have been equipped with catalytic converters of exhaust gases, as a result of which they have become more environmentally friendly, but at the same time they have lost 2 hp.

Shortly before the discontinuation of the Alfa 75, a Twin Spark Limited Edition version with a 2.0i TS engine was released in 1991. The participation of the Alfa 75 in many races did not go unnoticed; the famous Nicola Larini took part in the Alfa Romeo factory team.

The Alfa 75 was a huge success, as he saysthe act that despite the release in 1988 of the new flagship of the company - the Alfa 164, the 75th continued to be produced until May 1992, when the Alfa 155 helped the 164th completely replace the 7-year-old Alfa Romeo flagship.

According to a number of experts, the Alfa 75 was one of the best sports sedans of the late 80s and early 90s, ahead of its competitors in price / performance ratio such as the BMW 325i, BMW M3, Mercedes 190 2.3, Toyota Cressida, Nissan Maxima. ...
