The prototype of the Pontiac Bonneville, a full-size rear-wheel-drive luxury car with a transverse engine appeared in 1954. In 1957, serial production began, which continued at five US factories until 2005. In Canada, until 1981, it was known as the Pontiac Parisienne. Similar models were the Buick Lesabre and Chevrolet Impala. The successor to the model was the Pontiac G8.
In the first year of production, only 630 Bonneville units were assembled, making the surviving examples some of the most valuable to collectors. The car was equipped with a powerful 300-horsepower carburetv8 engine.
Between 1958 and 1961, a complete lineup was launched, including a 2-door convertible, a 2-door coupe, a 4-door sedan and a 4-door hardtop station wagon. In the 1960s, the second-generation Bonneville was the most expensive and luxurious Pontiac brand, which propelled the cars of this division of GM to the third place in the United States. In the Bonneville B linkedin version, the interior of the car was trimmed with walnut veneer, expensive materials, including leather, and a minibar was provided for the passenger.
FashionIt was based on the GM B platform. Standard equipment included a Hydra-Matic automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, air conditioning, power windows, power seats, cruise control, radio and alloy wheels. The car was equipped with V8 engines with a volume of 6.4 and 6.6 liters with a capacity of 303 to 340 hp, and since 1964 - 6.9 liters (376 hp). In 1967, GM decided to limit engine power to 390 hp, which is what the new 7-liter V8 had. In 1969, its power was reduced to 360 hp, and in 1970th for the third generation models, a 7.5-liter V8 with 370 hp appeared.
The fourth-generation Bonneville design continued to use the B platform; instead of a station wagon, they began to assemble a 4-door sedan with a hardtop body; the power of the 7-liter V8 engine became 325 hp, versions were also produced with an engine of 6.6 liters. The reduction in engine power took place as part of the implementation of the program to reduce harmful emissions, as well as the impending energy crisis. Between 1973 and 1976, the standard 6.6-liter engine dropped to 170 hp. In the middleFrom 1971, a new Turbo-Hydramatic gearbox and front disc brakes began to be installed on the car.
By the beginning of the release of the fifth generation Bonneville (1977-1981), its production remained at only three GM plants. They were used to assemble cars in coupe, sedan and station wagon bodies for 6 or 9 passengers. In the Pontiac lineup, only Bonneville remained full-size (with a wheelbase of 2946 mm).
The base V8 of 5 liters and 135 hp was installed on the car, versions with 5.7 liters (170 hp) and 6.6 liters (185 hp) were also offered.
Manufacturing at factories in the USA ceased in 1981year due to low market demand, which in turn was triggered by the next fuel crisis. Since 1982, Pontiac V8 engines have also ceased to be assembled, later they began to be supplied from other GM divisions: Chevrolet and Oldsmobile.
The sixth generation Bonneville became mid-size, based on the GM G platform; the wheelbase has decreased to 2743 mm. From 1982 to 1986, the car was manufactured by the Canadian branch of GM in Saint-Teresa (Quebec). From the bodies remained a 4-door sedan and station wagon. 2.8L and 4.3L V6 petrol engines (Chevrolet) and 3.9 liters (Buick), as well as a 5-liter V8 from Chevrolet and a 5.7-liter V8 diesel from Oldsmobile were aggregated with automatic transmissions: 3-speed TNM200 and 4-speed 200-4R.
In 1987, Bonneville was again launched in the United States, now only in the sedan body. The seventh generation became front-wheel drive, and its platform is again full-size (H), as a result, the wheelbase has grown - 2814 mm. There were several modifications: SE, LE. Dimensions differed slightly and were 5037/1839/1410 mm.
The power units from the Buick V6 3.8 liters (150 hp) were paired with a 4-speed automaticth transmission TNM440T4. Interior equipment included an on-board computer, an audio system, a key with remote door opening and much more. At the end of 1987, the car was included in the list of the 10 best models of the year.
In 1992, the modernization of the model continued, and production ramped up. The release of the eighth generation Bonneville was carried out until February 1999. The engine lineup consisted of five versions of the 3.8-liter V6 engine, and the transmission was represented by four varieties of the 4T60 / 65 4-speed automatic. In 1996, the model began to be equipped witha blown version of the base engine (240 HP, 380 Nm).
The length of the car has grown by 10 cm, the height by 1 cm, and the width by 5 cm. The exterior and interior design has been completely redesigned. The car has become faster and, most importantly, safer; appeared in the standard equipment of the driver and passenger airbags, and as an option - ABS.
The year 2000 saw the launch of the new, ninth generation Pontiac Bonneville in SE, SLE and SSEi trim levels. The front-wheel drive 4-door 5-seater sedan had dimensions of 5145/1885/1440 mm with a wheelbase of 2850 mm and a track of 1590/1580 mm. Luggage volumeth department was equal to 510 liters. The mass of the equipped car is 1720 kg. The minimum ground clearance was 135 mm.
The car was equipped with the already well-known overhead valves with a lower camshaft V6 12V 3.8 L (243 hp / 5200 rpm, 380 Nm / 3600 rpm) engines and a 4.6-liter V8 from Cadillac. The dynamics of the 3.8-liter engine is 8.5 seconds to 100 km / h, the maximum speed is 220 km / h. The consumption of AI-92 gasoline in the urban cycle is 13.1 liters, on the highway - 8.7 liters and in the mixed cycle - 10 liters per 100 kilometers. The motors were aggregated with 4-speed automatic transmissions 4T65-E, 4T65E-HD and 4T80-E.
PeThe single suspension consisted of a wishbone, a spring-loaded strut and a transverse stabilizer, while the rear one consisted of a double wishbone, a spring and a transverse stabilizer.
