The debut of the Pontiac GTO took place in 1964. The car ushered in the era of the Muscle Car. The GTO name was not easy. It meant gran turismo omologato and was not borrowed from anyone, but from Ferrari. The car was an experiment started by the great John DeLorean, then working for Pontiac. He introduced the GTO as an option for the Pontiac Tempest model. It was the most common Pontiac Tempest coupe. Except for one detail - instead of a weak engine, there was a 6.4-liter V8 engine with a capacity of under 350 "horses". John DeLorean proposed a dispute on engine loadTire tires, precise steering, twin exhaust. The democratic price for this car contributed to its frenzied popularity. In the first year, 32 thousand cars were sold. And this despite the fact that DeLorean himself planned to sell at most five thousand. Cars simply did not have time to produce.
In 1965, the GTO got an updated body - more massive and sharpened, the headlights changed from horizontal to vertical. The car was still distinguished by enviable dynamics. Tests of the Autocar magazine of the 1965 model showed:The drive from standstill to 161 km / h took only 18.6 seconds. But the car weighed at least 1.65 tons. In 1965-66, sales reached almost 100,000 cars a year - this was a record among those sold by Muscle Cars for all 10 years of these cars' existence.
In 1967, the body was updated again. This time, GTO pioneered the fashion of the Coca-Cola bottle. This design solution immediately began to be used by competitors.
In 1968, the GTO underwent a global restyling, in fact, it turned out to be a completely different car, which has little in common with the versions.and 65-67 years. The exterior acquired more aggressive features that were more suited to the explosive temperament of this car. In the latest fashion, the GTO has been gifted with retractable headlights. And although the car was delivered without them in the "base", this option was ordered so often that many considered it as a standard. The engine developed 366 hp. and accelerated the car in 6.2 seconds to "hundreds". But the main thing is that the updated GTO again presented an innovative solution and set the fashion for the absence of a classic bumper. Instead, an endura rubber bumper, nafraid of easy collisions.
1969 saw the peak in popularity of the Pontiac GTO, largely due to the introduction of a very powerful version called "The Judge". For her, four modifications of the V8 engine were offered with a capacity of 265 to 370 horsepower.
In 1970, the GTO changed its body again. But the main innovation was the engine with a crazy volume of 7.4 liters. At the same time, an interesting option appeared - a pneumatically controlled exhaust system, the meaning of which is that with a button on the console the driver could weaken the resistance to releasee and thereby increase the power, and with it the noise level.
Since 1971, the popularity of Muscle Cars has declined. The corporation managed to sell 10,000 vehicles with difficulty. It was also the last year for the GTO as a standalone Pontiac model. The next three years until the complete disappearance of the GTO returned to its origins - it became an option for the Pontiac Tempest Le Mans, Le Mans Sport and Ventura models. Until 1974, due to growing toxicity restrictions, high insurance rates for young drivers and the OPEC fuel embargo, engine power declined, sales becameeat less and less. In 1974, the GTO was equipped with motors with a capacity of only 200 hp. As a consequence of all this, Muscle Cars disappeared in 1974.
In 2004, the new generation Pontiac GTO sports coupe was created. It was based on the Holden Monaro model, but the Pontiac GTO has an original design of the body and interior, has a 2 + 2 seating arrangement, rear-wheel drive and 17-inch alloy wheels. The car received a rigid monocoque body with a high level of passive safety, powerful disc brakes with ABS, independent suspension of all wheels.
