The subcompact car with the euphonious name Clio (the muse of history in Greek mythology) replaced the Renault 5 at the end of 1990. The first generation of this compact car with a transverse engine and front-wheel drive was presented with a three- and five-door hatchback body. A year later, Clio won the 1991 Car of the Year competition in Europe.

Thanks to a rational layout and revised technical solutions, it offers more space for passengers and luggage inside. With an outer length of 3.71 meters, the Clio has a simplenny salon, high level of safety, stability and controllability.

An excellent addition to the attractive design was the high quality of the interior fittings and the level of the layout. The internal dimensions of the cabin allow four people to sit comfortably. The driving performance of the car can be described as a good balance of dynamism and softness. The suspension very smoothly filters the unevenness of the road surface, while the Clio perfectly holds the trajectory in the corner, is stable on a straight line. First generation cars had ABS brakeozov, airbags and air conditioning.

In 1993, the most powerful Clio with the Williams prefix entered the market. This version was equipped with a two-liter 150-horsepower engine.

In 1994, the first modernization was carried out: bumpers, headlights, and some interior details were changed.

In 1996, the Clio underwent a second restyling. The changes also mostly affected the front of the car, namely the bumpers and optics.

The body of the first generation Renault Clio is galvanized, therefore it is reliably protected from corrosion. Spare wheel in the old French traditionuzian automotive industry hangs under the bottom.

Installation of an economical 1.1-liter injection engine with 58 hp. allowed to reduce the number of modifications, so at the time of the cessation of production of engines there were six left, which was quite convenient not only for the company, but also for consumers. The main ones in the range were gasoline in-line four-cylinder 8-valve power units with a working volume of 1.2 liters (55 hp) and 1.7 liters (75 hp). A little later, a 1.8-liter 16-valve with 109 hp was added to them. In an urban setting with himfuel consumption is only 10.3 l / 100 km. The most economical in the range was a 1.9-liter 64-horsepower diesel, which consumes 6.6 liters of fuel per hundred kilometers. The engines were aggregated with a five-speed gearbox.

The equipment of the salon is rather modest. It is gorgeous only in the top version of the Clio Baccara, where you can see leather, wood, and full power accessories with air conditioning. Clio Williams is completely exclusive: few such cars were made, they can be recognized by golden bumpers and alloy wheels, and in the cabin each has a plate with a serial number - also posbrackish.

In terms of the convenience of the internal space, Clio will give odds to most competitors: a large wheelbase, a low loading height of the trunk, the rear side window opens on three-door versions, and the radio "compartment" is closed with a plastic cover. The rear seat backrest folds down in parts. Thanks to this, the boot volume varies from 265 to 1060 liters in both the three-door and five-door versions.

The driver's airbag was added at the end of 1995. The horn button is located not on the steering wheel, but at the end of the left armswitch.

The first generation Clio was released in the amount of 3.8 million and won many fans of this model.

But in the fall of 1998, the Renault Clio II was shown at the Paris Motor Show. Renault spent 3 years and 7.5 billion francs on the development of this model. The second generation has also become quite popular. The model has become a little larger (6 cm longer and 3 cm higher) and acquired a more rounded body shape. In Europe, cars are sold with 3- and 5-door hatchback bodies, but especially for the markets of the so-called third countries, in particular forRussia, a version of the Clio Symbol with a 4-door sedan body with a length of 4.15 m is produced.

The Clio II belongs to the upper subclass of the extra small class, that is, it sits between the Twingo mini-car and the Megane small mid-range model. The original appearance of the car combines the ideas of the new edge style and the classical European school. The new Clio looks very modern.

The interior was almost completely redesigned. A set of not very large, but well-readable dials is placed on the instrument panel under the original visor.

Renault Clio salon is equipped as itselfnecessary equipment, as well as additional little things that make the car more comfortable: a drawer under the front passenger seat, two cup holders in the center console and a spacious glove box with lighting.

At least 50% of the components are new or have been seriously changed. An important innovation is the electric power steering. Unlike hydraulic, it requires much less energy, lowering fuel consumption and taking less power from the engine.

Gamma enginelei Renault Clio has been replenished with a modern 16-valve 1.2-liter petrol engine with 60 hp. and a 1.5-liter common rail diesel with 80 hp. Remained in production and 1.2-liter eight-valve, as well as engines of 1.4, 1.6 and 1.9 liters with improved performance.

Now, starting from the basic equipment level, the car is equipped with ABS, emergency braking system, adaptive front airbags, supplemented by side airbags, belt pretensioners in the rear seats, and for the first time - a three-point"Isofix" child seat fastening system.

In more expensive versions, an electronic stabilization system, a rain sensor, automatic headlights, and 15-inch light-alloy wheels are provided. There is also one more popular option in the list of equipment - the navigation system.

Clio II has a completely new platform. The front suspension of the McPherson type is assembled on a vibration damping subframe, and the track is increased by 40 mm. The rear suspension is not torsion bar, but semi-independent, with trailing arms that fastento the body through rubber-metal bushings. Front disc brakes, rear drum brakes.

Since the summer of 1998, the model has been equipped with a 1.6 liter engine and an automatic transmission. In the fall of 1999, the Clio RS / Sport modification was released, prepared in conjunction with the specialists of the Renault Sport department. Its 2.0-liter engine develops 169 hp. and accelerates the car from standstill to 100 km / h in just 7.3 seconds.

The Clio family underwent minor changes in 2000. Standard equipment includes 14-inch wheels, remote-controlled central locking, bumpers in cuso colorwah. The range of engines was supplemented by a 1.4-liter 16-valve in-line "four" with a capacity of 98 hp, as well as a turbo-supercharged diesel engine of direct fuel injection with a working volume of 1.9 liters and an output of 80 hp.

In the fall of 2000, sales of the most powerful of the Clio family, the Sport V6, began. It is a two-seater, a two-seat V-6 in collaboration with Renault Sport and Tom Walkinshaw Racing, 3.0L displacement and 230 PS.

The new sporty V6 has a stylish nose, aluminum trimbody, as well as updated front and fog lights. New alloy wheels and thinner suspension components made the car a little lighter than the "progenitor". In addition, the dashboard was updated and sports seats were installed.

The third generation of the Clio was presented to the public in 2005. The sale of the 3-door version began in October 2005, and at the beginning of 2006 a 5-door modification appeared. Clio III is built on the B platform, developed in collaboration with Nissan. Renault Modus, Renault Logan (Dacia Logan), Nissan Micra and Nissan Note are built on the same platform. At the same time, the Clio II was not removed from production, but continued to be produced under the name Clio Campus. In 2006, Renault introduced the Hi-Flex Clio II with a 1.6L 16-valve engine. The car, destined for Brazil, features the Flex-Fuel concept, an engine that can run on a mixture of gasoline and ethanol in any proportion from 0% to 100%.

At the front, the striking design is accentuated by a large air intake in the lower bumper. The lines of the radiator grille and the center rib on the bonnet converge to a vertically positioned corporate rhombus. Headlight lines prodolie in the contours of the upper air intakes and bring dynamism to the Clio III's appearance. The side lines of the body converge under the rear window in the shape of a V, which, together with the streamlined shape of the taillights, gives the rear of the car a complete look.

The third generation turned out to be much larger and 130 kg heavier than the previous one. Thanks to the increased wheelbase, the interior is even more spacious. The hospitable salon can comfortably accommodate up to five people. Based on the concept of tactile design Touch design, thanks to which the interior looks soft and refined, and due to the large glazing area, the interior is literally flooded with light and looks even more spacious. The Clio III also offers a keyless immobilizer for the first time.

At the heart of the new model's road performance is balance, achieved through a combination of a long wheelbase, wide track and low center of gravity. Clio III is equipped as standard with advanced electric power steering, which makes the car smooth and precise.

Ruler motori include gasoline engines with a volume of 1.2 liters (75 HP), 1.4 liters (100 HP), 1.6 liters (110 HP) and two one and a half liter turbodiesels with a capacity of 86 and 106 HP. with. The cruise control and speed limiter allow the driver to maintain a constant vehicle speed or program the speed limit. The first function, the "regulator", is used mainly on highways and motorways. The second function "limiter" is used in settlements and at high traffic density.

It is noteworthy that the car received 5 stars in the reEuroNCAP safety rating and 4 stars for child protection.

Sales of the Renault Clio Sport began in June 2006 in France. This version is equipped with a six-speed gearbox and a new naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine, based on a similar engine from the second generation. Engine power is 145 kW (197 hp) at 7250 rpm. The top speed is 215 km / h and the acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 6.9 seconds.

In March 2007, the Clio was introduced as a station wagon.

In 2009, the Clio was modernized. The redesigned design features a large air grille.intake, other head optics and more strict taillights. The three-door modification especially benefited from this transformation - a purely family car appeared in a new sports quality. The length of the updated three-door Clio is 4027 mm, width - 1707, height - 1493; wheelbase - 2575 mm, track - 1472/1470. When fully seated, the boot capacity is 288 liters, while when the rear seats are folded down, it increases to 1040 liters. Accessories are offered that allow you to personalize the appearance of the car: a sports body kit andtrims, spoiler and enlarged exhaust pipe, chrome-plated mirrors and specially designed rims.

The interior of the redesigned Clio is no different from the previous version. There are only two complete sets: the model with “mechanics” comes in the Confort version, and with “automatic” in the Dynamique version. Both have power mirrors and windows, height-adjustable seats, side airbags and curtain airbags, ABS, cruise control, cornering lights and fog lights. Dynamique complete set is supplemented with CD-radio and separate climate controlat-control instead of an air conditioner. Adaptation for the Russian market comes down to increased ground clearance and underbody protection with steel sheets (the sports version of the Clio RS is supplied as is).

The tried and tested engine range starts from the 1.15-liter D4F 16-valve petrol with a maximum output of 75 hp. at 5500 min-1. It is the same, but turbocharged (D4FT) develops up to 101 forces, while the 1.6-liter K4M745, designed for a dynamic GT, produces all 128 at 6750 rpm. The GT version gains "one hundred" in 9.3 seconds. The maximum speed is 197 km / h. Wedniy gas consumption of 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers. If fuel economy is especially important for a potential buyer, then his attention should be paid to the performance with the K9K turbodiesel - from 68 to 106 hp. at 4 thousand revolutions.

The engines are equipped with a manual 5-speed gearbox, and only the most powerful "fours" - gasoline and diesel - are paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. And with a 1.6-liter engine from the K4M series with a maximum power of 112 horsepower, there is also a 4-speed hydromechanical "automatic".

Suspension Renault Clio did without fundamental changesnth: McPherson suspension in front, rear - on mating trailing arms. Coil springs, cross stabilizers; tires from 165 / 65R15 (hatchback with 1.15-liter "four" D4F) - up to 195 / 50R on 16-inch alloy wheels in GT. Front brakes with ventilated discs with a diameter of 260 mm, while the rear are ordinary drums. Disc brakes "in a circle" are equipped with Clio versions with a gasoline 1.6-liter 16-valve and 106-horsepower turbodiesel.

The safety of the new Clio is rated five stars by EuroNCAP.
