In the history of Mitsubishi, a car named Galant first appeared in 1969. This was the name of one of the modifications of the then Colt model. It was a small car with a classic layout, with a 1.5-liter engine and a dependent leaf spring rear suspension.

A little later, on the basis of this car, they made a dynamic coupe Colt Galant GTO, very high-tech for those times, with a two-shaft engine and a limited-slip differential.

The Colt Galant pioneered a family of high quality, prestigious vehicles thatsubsequently won numerous victories in rally competitions and repeatedly received Car of the Year prizes for high consumer qualities.

Among the hallmarks of the first Galant were an aerodynamic wedge-shaped body shape for additional downforce and a Saturn engine with an overhead camshaft and an aluminum cylinder head. Thus, Galant 1969, embodying the best modern developments and technologies of its time, became the ancestor of an entire segment of automobile market in Japan.

In 1973, the Galant debuted as a stand alone model. The car was presented with sedan and coupe bodies. In some countries it was sold under the name Mitsubishi Sapporo.

In 1976, the spring rear suspension was replaced with a spring suspension, and balance shafts appeared on the engines for the first time.

In 1980, the bodies and engine line were updated, the rear suspension became independent.

In 1983, the all-new Galant was introduced in Japan - a front-wheel-drive mid-range sedan with engines equipped with electronic fuel injection.... In Europe, cars with in-line "fours" with a volume of 2.0 or 2.4 liters were sold, in the States - with a V-shaped three-liter "six".

In 1987, the company introduced the fourth generation of the Galant, which was more sophisticated and technically sophisticated. The salon was distinguished by an unusual design of the front panel and a large interior space.

Smaller engines were equipped with multi-valve heads, and there was an ABS in the brake drive. In addition to the front-wheel drive, there was also a full one, with an interaxle limited slip differential. It was possible to customizelock the rear cross-axle differential. Plus independent suspension with automatic damping adjustment and body leveling.

True, all these technical delights were available only in the Japanese market; cars in a simpler design were supplied for export.

In 1992, the fifth generation Galant appears. It was slightly larger and heavier than its predecessor, distinguished by a more "rounded" design and a wide range of engines. The chassis design has become even more sophisticated: levers and shafts have been added to the suspensions.wheel drive, four-wheel drive and steering on all four wheels have also undergone changes. Having received a modern exterior and interior, the car retained all the best qualities of its predecessor: reliable handling, stable behavior at high speeds. This generation lasted only four years.

In 1996, Galant was introduced to the world at number six. The car has grown a little, received modernized engines, rich equipment and a catchy appearance. In Japan, in the first nine months since the start of sales, more than 80 thousandh cars. Galant won the local 1997 Car of the Year competition.

The appearance of this generation is radically different from the cars of the previous one. Gone are the rounded "inflated" shapes characteristic of cars of the early 90s. The shaping surfaces of the body are almost flat, with distinct intersecting edges, and this emphasizes the dynamic silhouette. The rapid change in vehicle generations has allowed Mitsubishi's own corporate identity to be crystallized.

Unlike its predecessor, the Galant of this generation did not have a hatchback body, but innew station wagon appeared (in Japan - under its own name Legnum). The range of engines was more modest, but Galant was one of the first in the world to be equipped with an adaptive automatic transmission (INVECS-II). And the second innovation was uniquely revolutionary - gasoline engines with direct injection of gasoline into the cylinders (GDI).

In general, about a dozen engines for the "sixth" Galant were offered, but the most common are in-line "fours" with a volume of 1.8 / 140 hp. or 2.0 liters, as well as a V-shaped "six" with a volume of 2.5 liters. Transmissiona choice of either mechanical or automatic.

In 2000, the Mitsubishi Active Stability Control (MASC) stabilization system became standard equipment.

In 2001, Mitsubishi Motors slightly updated the Galant lineup. All modifications of this model have received the "sport" package VR4 as standard equipment. This kit includes a sports body kit, 17-inch wheels, anti-lock brakes, brake force distribution, front airbags, CD player and leather steering wheelmomo wheel.

In the Equippe and Elegance versions, the car received titanium-like inserts on the front panel, while the Elegance version also includes side airbags, leather upholstery and climate control.

The new look gave the car a very dynamic look and also better reflected its driver car image.

In the basic version, the Galant is equipped with a 131-horsepower engine. There is also a version with a 2.4-liter diesel engine producing 142 hp and a top version with a 2.5-liter V6. Galant 2001 modelAvailable only in sedan and station wagon bodies, and the hatchback has sunk into oblivion.

In April 2003, at the New York Auto Show, the company unveiled a new generation of Galant for the US market. It is based on the front-wheel drive M1 platform, created with the participation of Daimler Chrysler. The design was developed by Pasadena, California, and the structure was developed at the DCX North American Design Center in Michigan and at the MMC Research Center in Okasaki, Japan. Galant dimensions are 4835x1840x1470 mm, wheelbase is 2750 mm. Front suspension - reinforced McPherson struts, rear applied by the companyNew multi-link design with passive steering effect.

The range of modifications: DE, ES, LS and the top version of the GTS. The DE and ES are equipped with a 2.4 L R4 16V MIVEC engine (160 hp), and the LS and GTS are equipped with a 3.8 L V6 24V (230 hp). For the 2.4 liter engine, a 4-speed adaptive automatic transmission INVECS-II is provided, and for the 3.8 liter engine there is a 4-speed automatic transmission Sportronic with the possibility of manual gear shifting. All versions are equipped with disc wheel brakes, air conditioning, a 140-watt audio system, electric windows and mirrors, central locking and an immobilizer. For LS and GTS additionallyrevised ABS, traction control system, leather upholstery, power seats, 270-watt Infiniti audio system, automatic climate control and much more, and for a surcharge - an electric sunroof.

Galant sedans of the latest generation since 2004 have been sold only in the domestic Japanese market and in Taiwan. Production takes place at the MMC plant in Nagoya, and Legnum station wagons were discontinued in the fall of 2003.

Galant sales in Europe and other global markets are discontinued. The Japanese Galant is available in VE (basic, front-wheel drive only), VR-G and Viento top versions (nemedium or permanent four-wheel drive). There is only one engine for all versions - 4G94 (R4 16V) with a volume of 2 liters with direct injection GDI (145 hp), equipped with an automatic 4-speed gearbox INVECS-II. The Viento package includes 4 airbags, ABS, fabric / leather interior trim, separate climate control, audio system with CD (for an extra charge - multimedia system with DVD and "navigation"), 16-inch wheels.
