The first time Mitsubishi Lancer was introduced to the world market in 1973. The car was originally conceived as a mass model and was supposed to take an intermediate place between the Galant midsize sedan and the Minica compact hatchback. It was a rear-wheel drive car, and it was produced in 12 versions with four-cylinder engines of the Saturn family of 1.2, 1.4 and 1.6 liters. Three body types were offered to choose from - a coupe, a sedan and a station wagon, the latter already then had the designation Station Wagon, which has survived to this day. The exterior of the car was distinguished by a broad proeat and swift front end. The safety of the driver and passengers was guarded by high strength and rigidity of the body, disc brakes with a redundant brake master cylinder and a safety steering column. In order to protect the environment, the original Mitsubishi MCA exhaust gas reduction system, a fuel vapor recovery system, and a crankcase emission reduction device were used.

The first charged version of the Lancer was the 1600 GSR model, which won three times in the Eastthe African Safari Rally from 1974 to 1976. Under the hood of this version was an engine with two carburetors, with which the car covered the 400-meter distance in 16.4 seconds.

In 1975, the Mitsubishi Lancer Celeste three-door hatchback appeared with a completely new body. The car was produced with 1.4 and 1.6-liter engines, then a 2-liter was added to them. This model was actively exported - in the USA it was sold under the name Plymouth Arrow, in Australia - Chrysler Lancer Coupe.

In 1976, the second generation Mitsubishi Lancer entered the series, which in fact was a modernnization of an existing vehicle. The car became more angular and this time it was produced only in a four-door body. The main changes are a different design of the front end and enlarged bumpers that comply with American safety standards: from the end of 1976, the Lancer began deliveries to the United States, where it was sold under the name Dodge Colt.

The third generation of the model appeared in 1979 and was called Lancer EX in Japan. Italian designer Aldo Cezano worked on the style of this generation. The highest level of comfort for those times createdThere are elegant trim, comfortable polyurethane seats and first-class air conditioning. The salon has become more spacious, and a four-link independent has come to replace the dependent rear suspension. Initially, only two engines were offered - with a volume of 1.4 and 1.6 liters. Both feature proprietary Silent Shaft technology with two balance shafts to reduce vibration. In 1980, the Lancer debuted with a 1.8 engine, which was available in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions. And for some markets, the Lancer 2000 Turbo was offered with a two-liter engine.with a capacity of 170 hp. In 1981, a "budget" modification with a 1.2 engine appeared.

Rear-wheel drive cars were produced until 1982, when they were replaced by Lancer Fiore (translated from Italian fiore - "flower") - the first front-wheel drive in the family. The basis for the fourth generation Lancer was the Mitsubishi Mirage. Smooth, streamlined shapes have been applied in the body design, emphasizing the excellent aerodynamics of the car. An impressive glass area and unique lighting fixtures have become the hallmark of the model. Range of power unitsoffered motors with a working volume of 1.2 to 1.6 liters. Standing apart was the turbocharged 1.4 engine, which developed 105 hp. As an alternative to a manual transmission, a three-stage "automatic" was optionally offered.

A year later, in 1983, the fifth generation Lancer was introduced. There were engines with fuel injection and turbochargers. The top version, for example, was equipped with a turbocharged engine (1.6 liters, 120 hp). A novelty is a 1.8 liter diesel engine. In addition, at first, a modification was proposed with a 1.5 liter engine equipped with a systemth MD (Modulated Displacement - adjustable displacement). It made it possible to turn off two of the four cylinders for a while and thereby save from 10% to 20% of fuel.

In 1985, the Mitsubishi Lancer was introduced with the Station Wagon station wagon, which a year later acquired a modification with permanent all-wheel drive. The station wagon was distinguished by its functionality and uniqueness of design. It harmoniously combined the spaciousness and comfort of the cabin, high directional stability and smooth running. Gasoline was used as power unitsthe 1500 Orion II and the 1800 Sirius diesel for fuel efficiency and high power. The 1500 Orion II engine was equipped with an electric carburetor to regulate the optimum air-fuel ratio for the driving conditions. The 1800 Sirius diesel engine was equipped with glow plugs to ensure a quick warm-up of the combustion chamber.

In 1988, the sixth generation Lancer appeared. The car was offered with two body types - a sedan and a five-door hatchback. At the same time, the station wagon of the old generationnot removed from production. There are five engines to choose from, including a 1.6-liter 16-valve (124 hp) and a 1.8-liter diesel (60 hp). A 69 hp carburetor engine was installed on the base Lancer 1.3 modification, and other gasoline engines were equipped with a fuel injection system. All-wheel drive versions were also offered.

In the fall of 1991, the "seventh" Lancer was presented at the Tokyo Motor Show. A year later, a station wagon version appeared (Libero in the Japanese market), and the hatchback disappeared from the production program. The two-door coupe was called the Mirag in Japan.e Asti Coupe, and in foreign markets - Lancer Coupe. For Europe, three engines were offered - gasoline with a volume of 1.3 and 1.6 liters, as well as a two-liter diesel. Along with a wide selection of different engines, all modifications were completed with automatic transmissions with electronic control and original adaptive "automatic" Mitsubishi INVECS-4A / T. The car was distinguished by a high level of active and passive safety, best-in-class handling and fuel efficiency. The seventh generation was remembered, first of all, by the GSR version, which isShe laid the foundation for the legendary Evolution family. It was equipped with a 4G93 turbo engine with a volume of 1.8 liters and an output of 195 hp. and an all-wheel drive transmission from the Galant VR-4. There was another exotic version on the Japanese market - with the smallest V6 at that time, the engine displacement was 1.6 liters.

In March 1995, the eighth generation Mitsubishi Lancer debuted with a rougher and more "faceted" appearance. Of the available bodies, only the sedan remained, although a coupe was also offered in some markets. The driver's airbag became standard equipment, and the passengerthe abalone was offered for a surcharge. European buyers were offered two gasoline engines of 1.3 and 1.6 liters. In other countries, the choice of power units was much wider.

In 2000, the ninth generation Mitsubishi Lancer began selling in Japan, which received its own name Cedia, although the eighth generation Lancer was still offered in most foreign markets. The Cedia was available in two body styles: sedan and Station Wagon. In 2002, Cedia appeared in the United States and Australia. The ninth generation Lancer for the European market is considered to be the result of the restyling of Cedia, pconducted in 2003. The car was offered with sedan and station wagon bodies, and differed from the Japanese version of the Lancer Cedia in a different design of the front end. The car received a slightly aggressive "muscular" shape, accentuated headlights, double radiator grilles and a central element with a large chrome emblem.

The overall height of the Lancer IX is 50 mm higher than that of its predecessor, and the overall length is 185 mm, which favorably affected the interior and luggage compartment capacity. Thanks to the wheel bumper extended by 100 mmze, the ninth generation Lancer has 60 mm more legroom for the front and rear passengers. The salon combines comfort and convenience, every detail is carefully thought out and calculated. The adjustable driver's seat, adjustable steering wheel, simple rotary knobs for air conditioning and heated seats provide intuitive operation.

The Lancer IX sedan was offered with three injection gasoline engines: 1.3, 1.6 and 2.0 liters. In these modern engines, Mitsubishi makes extensive use of light alloys to reduce weight, and also used a 16-valve gas distribution system. This ensures high fuel efficiency and low emissions. The manufacturer offered three gearboxes: a 5-speed manual for the 1.3 liter engine, a 4-speed automatic with a manual shift mode for the 1.6 engine and a 5-speed for the 2.0 liter version. In the Japanese market, the Lancer was offered with engines of 1.5 and 1.8 liters, and in North America, a modification was sold with a 2.4 liter four-cylinder engine (164 hp).

Independent suspension (renew type MacPherson, rear - multi-link with the effect of passive steering) provides the Lancer with a combination of driving comfort and high directional stability, achieving the maximum possible grip. It is very energy intensive and provides a smooth ride and high reliability on the road with any surface, be it asphalt, gravel, icy track or country road.

Lancer IX received the most modern active and passive safety systems: a reliable chassis with perfect independent suspensions, providing high stabilityand the absence of excessive body roll, informative steering with clear action. ABS helps to maintain directional stability during heavy braking on slippery surfaces. The EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution) system improves braking efficiency by always taking care of the ideal distribution of braking forces between the front and rear wheels at any load. The car was equipped with airbags, seat belts with pretensioners and force limiters. Crash-proof steering column is destroyed in an accidentin specially designed places, “leaving” the driver. For total peace of mind, there are ISOFIX child seat anchorages at the rear.
