In 1974, the Swedes faced the question of producing their own business class model. True, it turned out that Saab-Scania had neither the funds nor the experience to carry out such a project. At the turn of the eighties, the Swedish company entered into an agreement with Fiat Auto to jointly develop a model designed to become the flagship in the production programs of both parties. The project was codenamed Tipo 4.

And in May 1984, the first Saab 9000 rolled off the assembly line. Then the car was equipped with a single engine - the two-liter turbo engine that made the brand famousOrom with four valves per cylinder borrowed from the 900 Turbo 16S. Unlike older Saabs, the engine on the 9000 is laterally and tilted slightly forward.

Since 1987, a 4-speed German "automatic" ZF has been installed. Front suspension Saab 9000 - McPherson with one arm. The rear suspension is a very durable double trailing arm and Panhard rod. Unlike the classic Saabs of the 70s and 80s, the 9000 has a parking brake that locks the rear wheels, not the front wheels. After 1987, ABS became standard on the Saab 9000.

After restyling, the modification system was finally formed. Depending onand from the trim levels, the hatchbacks are called CS, CSE and Aero, and the sedans are called CD, CDE and Griffin. Note the Aero is a hatchback privilege.
