ALFA ROMEO 156 is a golf car with a transverse engine and front wheel drive, the successor of the 155 model.

The model was first shown in the fall of 1997. Since January 1999, the car is equipped with a 2.0 Selespeed gearbox with electro-hydraulic gear shifting, an automatic 2.5 Q-System gearbox. At the 2000 Geneva Motor Show, a sports station wagon was unveiled.

Three custom 2000 Sport Packages include not only sport-specific trim, Recardo seats and Momo steering wheels, but also high-performance, low-profile tirescategory W and an impressive rear spoiler on the trunk. Standard equipment on all models includes two front and two side airbags and an automatic air conditioning system. The power units remained unchanged.

The most prestigious model is the 156 Quadrifoglio Verde with a powerful 220 hp engine.

The model was named the best car in Europe in 1998. The design project for the Alfa 156 was carried out at the Alfa Romeo Centro Stile under the direction of Chief Designer Walter De Silva. The exterior design of the car is decided in the traditional style of Alfa Romeo: on the grille is happyIator branded shield with an emblem, the air intake has four narrow slots, the waistline is somewhat high, the side windows are small, chrome door handles on the front doors, narrow lights in the rear part of the body, an emblem covering the trunk lock and softening the massiveness of the trunk, a slightly upturned bumper. The body of the Sportline version is complemented by aerodynamic spoilers.

The interior of the car is restrained and harmonious: the dashboard, which can be decorated in a classic style (from "mahogany"), or in a sporty(made of carbon fiber and polished aluminum), steering wheel and seats equipped with all necessary adjustments.

The suspension was developed by the FIAT research center and the Alfa Romeo design bureau. Front suspension with double wishbones, triangular aluminum arms, spaced as far apart as possible, minimizes unwanted wheel alignment and provides the best traction. The rear suspension consists of McPherson struts, two transverse lower arms of different lengths and an asymmetricpersonal lever. This design minimizes camber changes, and when maneuvering at high speed, the rear wheel turns slightly towards the corner, which reduces the likelihood of skidding and helps stabilize the vehicle.
