The Alfa Romeo 159 was first introduced at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show as a sedan. The novelty is built on the Fiat Premium platform, which was used in the Brera, Spider and Kamal concept cars.

The exterior of the Alfa Romeo 159 was created by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro in collaboration with Alfa Centro Stile. The style of the new car is largely similar to its predecessor - Alfa Romeo 156. Note that when creating the developers based on the concept coupe Alfa Romeo Brera, which was presented back in 2002. The front of the car has a traditionnew V-shaped radiator grill. The grouped cylindrical headlights are located under the overhanging part of the bonnet, which gives the car a more aggressive look. Torsen technology was developed by the American corporation Gleason. The name Torsen is an abbreviation for "TORque SENsing", which translates as "torque sensation". All 3 versions of gasoline engines of the JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric) system, i.e. direct fuel injection systems.

As for the transmission, new ones have been developed for the Alfa Romeo 159transmissions: a manual transmission with a sports gearshift, a robotic Selespeed and an automatic QTRONIC transmission. They are all 6-step.

At the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, the Alfa Romeo 159 was presented as a station wagon. For 2007, engineers increase the 2.4-liter diesel engine to 207 hp.

At the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Alfa Romeo showcases the sporty TI (Turismo Internazionale) sedan and station wagon versions of the 159 model. Alfa Romeo 159 TI sports car received a new aerodNamic package, lowered sports suspension, large tires, 19-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brakes with red-painted calipers, chrome tailpipes and the same exterior mirrors.

The optional differences between the TI models and the "civilian" ones include: heated bucket sports seats; leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear lever; sports-styled instruments, aluminum pedals.

Sedan and station wagon 159 TI can be equipped with diesel or one of thezine engines, including the top version 3.2 V6 with an all-wheel drive system. Alfa Romeo 159 TI cars can be painted in three colors: Alfa Red, Stromboli Gray and Carbonio Black.
