The history of the creation of Probe is very original. The car is the product of the design thought of the two auto giants Mazda and Ford. But in the early 80s, no one could have imagined that the embodiment of this idea would be called Probe, and not Mustang. For at the very beginning of its project, the Japanese-American tandem set out to introduce the fourth generation Mustang to the world. But, unfortunately, when rumors of a new Mustang reached the general public, a huge wave of criticism rose. The reasons for the dissatisfaction were front-wheel drive, Japanese heritage and the lack of a V-shaped eighthrki. Ford, inundated with letters from many fans of the "true" Mustang, was forced to reconsider its plans and start work on the new Mustang from scratch. The sports coupe, which previously claimed the right to own the racing stallion nameplate, has been renamed Probe.

It premiered at the 1988 Chicago Auto Show, where the Probe was introduced as a 1989 model. A sporty look was not all that was offered to potential buyers. Starting their car with various options, the creators tried to pleaseeven the most demanding customers. Options included cabin air conditioning, cruise control, on-board computer and full power accessories.

Probe was offered in three trim levels: GT, LX, GL.

The GT was equipped as standard: disc brakes on all wheels, sports seats with a large number of adjustments, electric mirrors, alloy wheels, adjustable steering column and power steering.

As options were offered: ABS, electronic instrument cluster, lifting sunroof, electricdriver's seat, power windows, Hi-Fi audio system and air conditioning.

On the GT modification, shock absorbers with variable stiffness were installed (from the passenger compartment, with a button). Three positions - soft, normal, sport.

If you cannot imagine your existence without an automatic transmission, you would have to choose between the GL and LX models. These models had softer suspension, narrower tires, and more rigorous bodywork. Compared to the GL, the LX boasted more luxurious interior trim. Like the GT, the LX and GL models could be equipped with differentoptions.

The main driving force is a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission.

In the 1990 lineup, a light restyling of the body was carried out, a new engine was also added. The LX was now powered by Ford's popular 3-liter, 24-valve V-engine with electronic fuel injection. The engine produced 140 hp. at 4800 rpm and a torque of 217 N / m at 3000 rpm.

In 1992, the LX V6 was redesigned and added another 5 hp to its performance. power and 7N / m of torque. KaBy the time during this period, work on the second generation Probe was in full swing.

In 1993, Ford and Mazda joined forces again to create the second generation Probe.

The platform, as for the first generation, was the 626th Mazda. Responsibilities were divided as follows: Ford worked on the exterior and interior, Mazda worked on the engine and chassis. Managed to create an excellent car with excellent handling on the road, correcting the mistakes of the first generation. The new Probe gained 5 cm in length, 10 cm in width, and managed to lose about 60 kg.

Bthe base model received a 2-liter 4-cylinder Mazda engine with 16 valves and giving 115 hp. at 5500 rpm and 168 N / m of torque at 3500 rpm. The GT model was powered by Mazda's new 24-valve 2.5-liter V-6 engine with multi-point injection and computer variable valve timing. The V6 produced 164 hp. at 6000 rpm and 211 N / m of torque at 4000 rpm.

When Ford launched the new Mustang in 1994, Probe sales began to plummet. Therefore, the company planned to discontinue production in 1996to the Ford Probe, but managed to hold out until 1997. In its most recent year, the Ford Probe set a sad record with 32,505 cars sold, the worst of any Ford model. On March 17, 1997, Ford officially announced the discontinuation of the Probe models.

Despite this, the company planned to subsequently release the third generation of the Probe model, built on the Ford Contour and Mercury Mystique platforms. The base model Probe of the third generation was supposed to have the same 4-cylinder as the model of the secondkneeling, but already giving out 125 hp. at 5500 rpm and 217 N / m at 4000 rpm. The engine of the GT model was supposed to be from the second generation GT model, but already giving 170 hp. at 6250 rpm and 275 N / m at 4250 rpm. But unfortunately, just like the Probe, born to be the fourth generation Mustang, the new Cougar was born out of what was supposed to be the third generation Probe.
