The Smart Fortwo is a minicar two-seater coupe that was first introduced by the British company Smart GmbH (a subsidiary of Daimler AG) at the 1998 Paris Motor Show. The name of the car "Fortwo" comes from the phrase "For Two", which means "For two" in Russian. Currently, models of this class are called "City Coupe" ("city coupe"). Until now, two generations of this model have already been presented.

The first who took up the creation of such a kup, there was Mercedes, which produced the Mercedes A-class, but the project was not successful, as the safety of this car left much to be desired (mainly related to the results of tests for stability of handling in emergency situations). At this time, Smart decided to tackle this project, and as a result, the car was completely revised and received costly improvements that affected the body structure, handling and technical equipment of the car. However, initial sales were significantly less than planned. OProduction volumes had to be cut from 200,000 to 80,000 vehicles per year, which was quite difficult for a new company with only one model being produced. As for the structure itself, it is based on a solid steel frame called "Tridion", which surrounds and protects passengers, defining the car's shape and design. Plastic body panels are attached to it, which can be changed without any problems. The wheelbase of the first generation Smart Fortwo cars was 1,810 mm, length - 2,500 mm, width - 1,510 mm, and height - 1,500 mm.
