The Volvo 940 range was launched in the fall of 1990. The model, in fact, is a further development of the angular rear-wheel drive 700 series, which can be clearly seen already in the design, although it has become less angular, the appearance of the model has not fundamentally changed. The silhouette was mainly corrected with a greater angle of inclination of the C-pillars and glass, changing the front end and bumpers. Compared to the 700, the 900 sedans have increased boot capacity, and the lid connector is lowered to the bumper.

At that time, the boxy style "boxy", in which the authormobiles from the 700 series Volvo, slowly began to lose their relevance. In other words, out of fashion. But the developers managed to breathe a second life into the once popular car, rounding its sides, and replacing the seven in the name with nine.

In terms of durability, safety and comfort, the company remained true to itself: an eight-year warranty on the body, standard built-in additional side impact protection beams in the doors, airbags for the driver and passenger (since March 1992), a spacious interior where they can comfortably accommodate five hoursnimble and a decent 500-liter trunk.

The 940 differs from the more expensive 960 not only in that the first has a 4-cylinder and the second has a 6-cylinder engine. They, like the 740 and 760, have different rear suspensions: the 940 has a dependent, and the 960 has an independent one. It is very difficult to distinguish these models at first glance.

Volvo 940 has quite solid dimensions, belongs to the executive model and is considered one of the most affordable in this class. Dimensions are impressive (4870x1750x1410 mm), turning radius (9.9 m). Solid and heavy (gross weight 1950 kg) caran abundance of traffic on a variety of roads is very reliable.

The interior of the spacious cabin has not undergone any special changes. The seats are comfortable. Ventilation and powerful heating are signature features of the Scandinavian brand, as is the built-in electric seat heating.

The handling of the 900 series has remained roughly the same as the previous 700 series, which is not surprising, since the chassis with rear-wheel drive and the spring-link suspension have remained almost unchanged.

The Volvo 940 has a number of new safety features. This model is in stdThe original equipment had three-point inertia seat belts and adjustable rear seat head restraints, which was the beginning of the transition of the whole world to the same standards. What's more, there was an integrated child seat in the rear seat, which has been installed as an option since autumn 1992.

A station wagon version was also produced. These cars are distinguished by a large useful volume, convenient "pockets", nets for securing luggage (in some configurations), etc.

The station wagon is roomy, like a cargo van, the luggage compartment can be separated from the passenger compartment, mesh. In addition to the main passenger seats, an additional seat for two can be installed in the rear of the station wagon, which, given the very large luggage space (from 990 to 2125 liters with the rear seats folded), makes this station wagon almost a mini-van.

It is noteworthy that the 900 station wagons are so similar to their predecessors in the 700 series that an amateur can only recognize them by the corresponding inscriptions on the nameplates.

Model 940 was equipped only with in-line petrol "fours": a turbocharged 2.0-literB200FT 155 hp (for export mainly to Southern Europe), a 2.3-liter injection B230F with a power of 135 hp. and a turbocharged B230FT with 165 hp, a 16-valve B234F with 155 hp. and noisy 2.4-liter six-cylinder turbodiesels D24T and D24T1С with 109 and 115 hp respectively. Since September 1992, they have been supplemented by a 122-horsepower D24T2C.

The 940 used five different types of gearboxes. Most often, there are cars equipped with a 4-band automatic transmission and a 5-speed manual gearbox.

In 1996, the family experienced a restyling: headlights, bumpers and interior were updated. The indexes also changed: the sedan was renamed S90, and the station wagon was renamed V90. In 1998, the family was discontinued. These were the last Volvo cars with rear-wheel drive.
