Under the name Eldorado, cars were produced that were slightly different both externally and internally, but this line (Eldorado) remained top for Cadillac. The exceptions were: the Brige model, which was produced between 1957 and 1960, and was the most expensive; the 75 series with a wide wheelbase, which included both sedans and limousines.
The name Eldorado has been proposedo for the 1952 Cadillac Golden Jubilee Special Auto Show. The word Eldorado was derived from two Spanish words "el dorado", which means "gilded" or "gold".
The first Cadillac Eldorado was born in 1953. It was the production version of the concept 2-door convertible. A total of 532 copies of this version were released. The car was based on the platform of the 62 series. For the 53rd Eldorado, 4 body colors were offered: Aztec Red, Alpine White, Azure Blue and Artisan Ocher. An option was also proposed inuzov convertible. Of the identification marks on the body, there is only one gold-plated nameplate “Eldorado”. Under the hood of this version, an engine was installed, which was also borrowed from the 62nd series. It was a 5.4-liter V8 power unit with a capacity of 210 hp. The length of the car was 5610 mm and the width was 2000 mm.
Cadillac Eldorado at that time became the founder of General Motors' design ideas. The rest of the car companies began to follow the trends in the Eldorado style and adopt elements of its appearance.
In 1955, Eldorado hadthe rear part was changed, which received a kind of stylish "fins". They looked quite contrasting against the background of the wide sides of the car.
In 1956, the 2-door hardtop coupe version was named the Eldorado Seville. In turn, the convertible version was called Eldorado Biarritz.
1957 was marked by the release by General Motors of one of the most memorable projects - the Eldorado Brige. This 4-door hardtop sedan was a car with ultra-class comfort. The Boldens had a stainless roof, air suspension, first memory seats, andother advanced options available to GM at the time. Its price tag of $ 13,074 made the Eldorado Bicies the most expensive car in its class.
In 1960, the last Cadillac Eldorado Seville models were released. By that time, the Eldorado Seville had become essentially a stripped-down luxury version of the Cadillac Series 62 convertible. Of course, the Eldorado convertible could have been kept in the lineup, but due to minor differences with its sibling, it was decided to discontinue production. By 1964, the main distinguishing feature of the Eldorado series remained the convex sides of the car.
1967 Cadillac El exteriordorado has been radically redesigned. The basis for the development of the new design was taken such cars as: Buick Riviera and Oldsmobile Toronado, which were presented in 1966. Cadillac also adopted front-wheel drive from them. Under the hood was a 8.2-liter V8 engine with a modified turbocharger (THM 425, based on the THM 400) and a torque converter mounted next to the planetary gearbox. Although the new generation Cadillac Eldorado was based on the Riviera and Toronado, the exterior design manager from General Motors - Beell Mitchell, was able to give uniqueness to the new Eldorado. It was a coupe with a long bonnet compared to the rest, and hidden headlights. Acceleration of the updated coupe to 100 km / h took less than nine seconds, and the maximum speed was 192 km / h. Handling and ride comfort were widely touted in reviews of the time. Disc brakes were offered as an option in 1967 and were fitted as standard in 1968. The car sold well, despite the rather high price tag.
In 1968, some changes were made to the Cadillac Eldorado, whichSome were associated with the emergence of new standards for emissions of exhaust gases.
In 1969, the hidden headlights were replaced with conventional ones, and the roof received a vinyl finish. A little later, a transparent hatch appeared in the roof.
In 1970, a 8.2-liter V8 power unit was installed on the Cadillac Eldorado. It is the largest displacement V8 engine ever produced. Its power in 1970 was 400 hp. with a maximum torque of 746 Nm. This powertrain was an Eldorado exclusive until 1975, when it became standard on full-size cars.mobile Cadillac.
In 1971, when the exterior of all full-size Cadillac models was updated, for the Cadillac Eldorado there was again a version in a convertible body and those same classic volumetric sides. In 1978, the Eldorado model was launched with a wheelbase of 3213 mm, undergoing minor external changes in 1973 and 1975. 1973 was marked in the history of the Cadillac Eldorado as Eldorado's participation in the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race (Indianapolis 500 miles).
For 1977, the Cadillac Eldorado gets a new grille with a prettier mesh. In the same year, the Cadillac convertible was replacedEldorado comes the new top-of-the-line open-top Eldorado Biarritz line. The last time this name was used was only in the 60s. Also replacing the 8.2-liter V8 engine, which was installed between 1970 and 1976, comes a new seven-liter V8 with a volume of 7 liters. In 1978, some more minor changes were made.
This generation of Cadillac Eldorado, produced from 1971 to 1978, became a popular vehicle that featured prominently in films and was featured in the literature. There was even a stereotype thatit is an exclusive vehicle that is made to order only.
In 1979, the sixth generation of the Cadillac Eldorado appeared. This year, the Eldorado was already much more modest both externally and in terms of technical equipment. The new version was also based on the Riviera and Toronado chassis. Two variants of V8 engines with volumes of 5.7 and 6.0 liters were offered, instead of the more voracious engines of the previous generation with volumes of 7.0 and 8.2 liters. Cadillac, with the introduction of this model, has revived the use of the "stainless roof" concept. But it is worth noting that Eldorado still remainedcamping car of impressive size with a spacious interior and a powerful engine.
An unfortunate production hitch occurred in 1981 when the Cadillac Eldorado was fitted with a new V8-6-4 switchable engine. It was equipped with an electronic system that was supposed to deactivate some of the cylinders when maximum engine power was not required. The transition to such engines was associated with the tightening of CAFÉ standards (fuel consumption standards for cars). But the system did not work the way it wanted, and sometimes it is not a slaveotala in general. Therefore, it was decided to install a V8 with a volume of 5.7 liters, which was installed on cars of the Oldsmobile brand. This engine was quite agile and durable, but buyers mostly complained about its complex electronics. But the reputation of Eldorado was not damaged for a long time and, soon, sales began to grow again.
Another setback was the installation of a 5.7-liter Oldsmobile diesel engine proposed in 1979. Buyers not familiar with the features of the new diesel engine often misused it (for example, do notthe glow plug warmed up), and due to the fact that the block head bolts did not meet the necessary requirements (did not withstand high pressure), the cylinder head gasket often failed. Subsequently, the engine was revised and the shortcomings were eliminated, which led to a decrease in power from 120 hp. up to 105 hp
In 1984, Cadillac introduces the updated Eldorado Biarritz convertible. He was 91 kg heavier. The interior of the car has remained unchanged. Due to the fact that 1985 was the last year when the Cadillac Eldorado was produced in the back of a convertible, and aboutSince the last version was released in 1000 copies, today this car is a target for many collectors.
In 1986, the Cadillac Eldorado got even smaller. This move was very dangerous. This expensive car was now the same size as the subcompact General Motors cars of yesteryear, and much smaller than its competitor, the Lincoln Mark VII. Later it became known from the news that such a change in this model was caused by an erroneous forecast of the rise in fuel prices in the United States. Based on this forecast, GM planned that with the rise in prices forGasoline will significantly increase the demand for small luxury cars. But the forecasts did not come true even by half. Car sales of the new Cadillac Eldorado model decreased 5 times. Buyers and critics alike viewed this car as a mistake by the company.
In 1992, Cadillac introduces the new Eldorado. The dimensions of the new items only slightly increased, but due to the new concept of appearance, these small changes seemed more impressive. The Cadillac Eldorado was now powered by a new 4.9-liter Northstar V8 engine. Its power was 200 hp... The combination of streamlined shape and fairly high power was excellent. Sales were growing, but they were already far from record heights. Apparently, many buyers were not satisfied with the 2-door coupe for a price higher than the similar 4-door sedan Cadillac Seville.
In 1995, the 4.9-liter Northstar V8 was replaced by a 4.6-liter V8 with 275hp. and 300 hp.
In 1999, General Motors prepared a concept based on the Eldorado for the North American International Auto Show. The concept car was named "EldoRODo". A little later GM's guide toannounced that the jubilee 2002 (50th model year of the Eldorado series) will be the last for the Cadillac Eldorado. To mark the end of the Eldorado era, it was decided to produce a limited edition of 1596 cars in red and white, which were available for the 1953 convertible.
Production ended on April 22, 2002.
