The Italian sports car of the GT class Maserati Ghibli made its debut in 1966 at the Turin Auto Show. Generation Ghibli I had two body modifications: coupe and "spider" (convertible). In those years, it was the most popular Maserati model, competing with such giants as Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Miura.

Serial production of the 2-door 2-seater coupe began in 1967. The body was all-metal with the famous low shark-shaped front end, the headlights were pop-up. Ghibli was designed by renowned designer and owner of ItalDesign, Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Onthe car was equipped with 4.7 liter and 4.9 liter V8 petrol engines (335 hp; since 1970). The power of the first engine was 330 hp, acceleration to 100 km / h took 6.9 seconds, and the maximum speed was 248 km / h.

In 1969, a version in the back of a convertible was launched into production, or, as it is customary to call it in Italian carsmanufacturers - spider. This modification was relatively rare due to the insignificant release: there was one spider per 10 Ghibli I coupe.

The successor to the Ghibli I was the Khamsin model co-developed with Bertone.

The next generation Maserati Ghibli saw the light of day almost twenty years later: in 1992. The 2-door 4-seater coupe had an external resemblance to another model of this company - Shamal. Sales weren't going as well as originally anticipated. In 1993, Maserati became part of the Fiat Group, and the next year the car was modernized. Has been updatedinterior, new wheels were installed, and the suspension became electronically adjustable.

The Ghibli II was designed to meet the needs of the modern sports car driver who desires not only speed, but also a comfortable ride. The exterior of the car, which combines the exquisite style inherent in the Maserati brand and excellent aerodynamic qualities, was a particularly successful find of the designers.

The dimensions of the body were 4223/1775/1310 mm with a wheelbase of 2514 mm and a track of 1520/1520 mm. Curb vehicle weight 1365 kg (with automatic transmission - 1406 kg), maximal - 1765 kg. The luggage compartment volume is 420 liters.

The interior is equally stylish and extremely comfortable: upholstery in high-quality Connolly leather, mahogany inserts, automatic ventilation and air conditioning, a three-way adjustable steering wheel, electric side mirrors, power windows, two-way adjustable front seats and much more.

A special feature of the Ghibli II was a particularly robust floor pan, which increased traffic safety. Passive safety providedalso airbags, central door locks and 3-point seat belts for front and rear passengers.

The Ghibli II was fitted with new V6 24V Biturbo twin-turbo engines of 1.996 L (for the European market) and 2.8 L (for America). These engines had 2 overhead camshafts for each bank of cylinders, a light alloy crankcase, fuel injection with electronic ignition control and were located in the front longitudinally. A car with a 2-liter power unit (280 hp) accelerated to "hundreds" in 5, 7 seconds and had a top speed of 249 km / h. The average consumption of AI-95 gasoline was 12.7 - 12.9 liters per 100 km.

The engines were aggregated with 5- or 6-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmissions.

The Ghibli II was equipped with a fully independent suspension with electronic regulation of four driving modes. The front consisted of MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar; the rear had double telescopic shock absorbers.

Braking performance of the Ghibli was provided by independent hydraulic drivesodes with a servo motor, as well as ABS, used on the front and rear ventilated brake discs. The standard tire size is 205/50 R17.

Production of the Ghibli II was completed in 1997 and was succeeded by the Maserati 3200 GT.

In 2013, after a long hiatus, the Ghibli returned to the production line in the form of a sports four-door sedan. The world premiere took place at the Shanghai Motor Show. The model is built onon the upgraded Quattroporte platform. The Ghibli was created according to the classic sports car patterns, but interspersed with modern trends in aerodynamics and automotive fashion. The spirit of family design is present in every element of the body. The front part received compact headlights with acombined filling (active bi-xenon and LED daytime running lights). The shark mouth of the false radiator grille with the company logo in the form of a trident is harmoniously located on a neat bumper, complemented by a lower air duct. The forward-flowing bonnet and the powerful profile of the wheel arches eloquently hint at the sedan's phenomenal speed and dynamic characteristics.

A long hood, front fenders with ventilation gills, a heavily piled back windshield frame, a refined line of the roof dome resting on thin pMedium and powerful rear pillars, compact and at the same time lush stern - all exterior lines are harmoniously interconnected. The back row doors with an ascending sill line and a complex doorway configuration look especially original and interesting. The side surfaces are decorated with embossings and bulges that visually expand the car and additionally create downforce and provide an aerodynamic air resistance coefficient of 0.31 Cx.

The rear part of the body is decorated with headlights of dimensional lightingiki with a fashionable LED filling, a compact trunk lid with a high vertical part, a stylish bumper with harmoniously defined vertical ribs, emphasizing the ceiling lamps and a pair of bifurcated exhaust system nozzles.

When ordering a car, you can choose the color of the enamel from fourteen different options ranging from the basic Bianco (white), Nero (black) and ending with the special Rosso Energia (racing red) and Azzuro Allegria.

The body of the sedan is made with a wide use of durable and high-strength steel, aluminum (doors and hood). The curb weight of the sedan, depending on the installed engine and drive type, ranges from 1810 kg to 1870 kg, with an ideal 50:50 axle weight distribution.

Maserati offers its customers a wide range of interior customization options. Potential owners can choose from six interior colors and 19 interior trim combinations. Natural high-quality leather is actively used in the decoration; not only the chairs of the first and second rows can be covered with it, but also, if the client wishes, door cards, the upper hourdashboard and all surfaces visible to the eye. Wood, aluminum or carbon are used as decorative inserts.

The stylish instrument panel with two deep wells for the speedometer and tachometer is complemented by a 7-inch TFT color multifunction display. Maserati says the diesel engine will sound almost identical to the gasoline variants, thanks to a specially tuned Active Sound System exhaust system and resonators in the mufflers and tailpipes.

Only eight are offered as a transmissionstepped "automatic" ZF with five operating modes - Auto Normal, Auto Sport, Manual Normal, Manual Sport and ICE (Increased Control and Efficiency).

In the European market, the Ghibli will be available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive system in normal driving conditions transmits one hundred percent of the torque to the rear wheels, but if necessary, it can be redistributed along the axles in a 50:50 ratio in 150 milliseconds. This transmission is only available with a top-end gasoline engine. In addition, on all modifications of the Ghibli, the basic configuration is already installed with aFront mechanical limited slip differential.

The top Ghibli also received six-piston Brembo brakes with 360mm discs on the front axle and four-piston brakes with 350mm discs on the rear. At a full stop from 100 kilometers per hour, the sedan will need 36 meters. All Ghibli's come standard with 18-inch wheels. For a surcharge, discs are available in dimensions from 19 to 21 inches.

Ghibli sales started in the fall of 2013. The car has become a worthy competitor to its classmates Mercedes E-class, BMW 5-series, Audi A6 and Jaguar XF.
